The air was thick with the stench of decay as Damien and Mira approached a towering, crumbling fortress. Rumors of a scientist inside—a rogue working on a cure for the zombie virus—had led them here. But standing before the dark, foreboding walls, Mira hesitated.
"Are we sure about this?" she asked, gripping her blade.
"We don't have a choice," Damien replied, his voice firm. "If there's a chance he's real, we need to find him."
They stepped through the half-collapsed gate, the fortress silent save for the faint moans of distant undead. The dim corridors were littered with broken machinery, dried bloodstains, and ominous graffiti scrawled on the walls: "Beware the Shadow King."
"Shadow King?" Mira whispered, her voice trembling.
"Probably just a myth to scare people away," Damien muttered, though his hand tightened around his shotgun.
As they ventured deeper, they encountered resistance—not zombies, but traps. Blades swung from hidden panels, and pressure plates triggered bursts of flame. Damien's lawman instincts kicked in, guiding them safely past the hazards, though each step brought fresh tension.
Finally, they reached a cavernous lab in the fortress's heart. It was a stark contrast to the decay outside: pristine, cold, and sterile. Shelves of vials glowed with eerie, luminescent liquids. In the center, a gaunt man in a tattered lab coat hunched over a workstation. His wild eyes snapped to them as they entered.
"You're not supposed to be here!" he barked, grabbing a makeshift weapon—a steel rod.
"Dr. Kellan?" Damien asked, lowering his gun slightly. "We're not here to hurt you. We need your help."
Kellan hesitated, his gaze flickering between them and the lab's entrance. "Help? That's rich. You think I've survived this long by helping people?"
"You've been working on a cure," Mira interjected. "We heard rumors—"
"Rumors," Kellan scoffed. "People always hear what they want to. What I've made isn't a cure. It's…" He trailed off, his expression darkening.
Before he could explain, the fortress trembled. A guttural roar echoed through the halls, followed by the unmistakable shuffle of countless undead.
"They've found me," Kellan whispered, his face draining of color. "The Shadow King's pets. He sends them to punish those who defy him."
The lab's doors burst open, and a wave of mutated zombies poured in. These weren't the shambling husks Damien was used to; they were faster, stronger, and more coordinated.
"Fight now, questions later!" Damien shouted, unloading his shotgun into the horde. Mira spun and slashed, her movements fluid and fierce.
Kellan fumbled with a console, shouting over the chaos, "I can seal the lab, but it'll trap us inside!"
"Do it!" Damien ordered.
