Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 302

The rooftop groaned under Zara Kincaid's weight as she crouched low, her gaze locked on the flickering shadow in the distance. The dim glow of the setting sun painted the horizon in hues of orange and red, casting long, eerie silhouettes. The figure moved with precision—not the erratic shamble of the undead. This was human, but that didn't make it safe.

Zara adjusted her grip on her handgun, her knuckles whitening. The memory of betrayal was fresh in her mind, a cruel lesson in trust during the apocalypse. Every encounter with another survivor was a gamble.

"Bishop," Zara murmured into her earpiece. "I've got a human in my sights. They're...different. Not with the horde."

"Different how?" Bishop's voice crackled in her ear, tinged with concern.

"They're moving with purpose. Trained. Armed." Zara's eyes narrowed as the figure stopped near the edge of the rooftop across from her. She could just make out the glint of a rifle slung across their back. "What's our play here?"

"Your call, Kincaid. But stay sharp. People are more dangerous than zombies."

Zara exhaled sharply, her breath visible in the cold air. She holstered her weapon but kept her hand close to it. Standing up slowly, she raised her hands, palms out, in a gesture of peace. The figure froze, their posture rigid.

"Hey!" Zara called, her voice cutting through the eerie silence. "I'm not looking for trouble. Just trying to survive, same as you."

The stranger didn't respond immediately. Instead, they shifted slightly, their face still obscured by the shadow of their hood. Zara's instincts screamed at her to run, to take cover, but she held her ground.

Finally, the figure spoke, their voice low and gravelly. "If you're not looking for trouble, why are you following me?"

Zara frowned. "Following you? I was here first. You're the one wandering into my territory."

A dry chuckle escaped the stranger. "Territory? In this wasteland? That's rich."

Zara rolled her eyes. "Look, I don't have time for this. If you're not a threat, we can go our separate ways. But if you're planning something…" She let her voice trail off, her hand brushing her holstered weapon for emphasis.

The stranger tilted their head, seemingly considering her words. Then, they stepped forward, into the dying light. Zara's breath caught. The figure was a woman, clad in tactical gear that had seen better days. Her face bore the hard lines of someone who'd survived unimaginable horrors, but her eyes...they were sharp, calculating.

"Name's Callum," the woman said, lowering her hood. "I'm not here to fight. Just scouting for supplies."

Zara relaxed slightly but didn't lower her guard. "Zara Kincaid. This area's been picked clean. You won't find much."

Callum smirked. "We'll see about that."

As she turned to leave, Zara hesitated. Something about Callum felt off. Trust was a rare currency these days, and Zara had none to spare. But the gnawing curiosity in her gut refused to be silenced.

"Wait," Zara called out. "Maybe we can help each other."

Callum paused, glancing over her shoulder. "Maybe. But that depends...can I trust you?"

Zara's lips curled into a faint, humorless smile. "That makes two of us."
