The helicopter's engines hummed steadily, the noise a welcome break from the chaos Zara and Callum had just escaped. "Where are we headed?" Callum finally asked, her voice strained but curious.
The pilot, a grizzled man with a headset that seemed older than the helicopter, turned slightly. "Ravenwood Sanctuary. Closest safe zone still standing. You'll get patched up there."
Zara's eyes narrowed. "I've heard of Ravenwood. Isn't it run by the Vanguard Collective?"
The pilot nodded. "Yeah. Vanguard's in charge. And if you're lucky, they'll let you stay."
Zara frowned, leaning back in her seat. The Vanguard Collective was notorious for their rigid rules and their demand for loyalty above all else. Survivors didn't just stay at Ravenwood—they became part of Vanguard's army, whether they liked it or not.
As the helicopter descended, the sprawling encampment came into view. High walls reinforced with steel and concrete surrounded the sanctuary, and guards patrolled every inch of the perimeter. Watchtowers loomed above, their searchlights cutting through the darkness. The gates opened slowly, revealing a small city bustling with survivors, traders, and armed soldiers.
"This feels... too good to be true," Callum muttered, her eyes scanning the settlement. "A place doesn't survive without strings attached."
Zara nodded, her instincts on high alert. "We'll figure it out. Just play it cool."
The helicopter landed on a makeshift pad, and the pair were immediately greeted by two Vanguard officers. The taller of the two, a woman with a stern expression and a rifle slung across her back, stepped forward.
"Welcome to Ravenwood," she said curtly. "I'm Captain Renna. You'll be escorted to medical for evaluation, then to Commander Kade for debriefing. Weapons stay holstered, or you'll be shot. Clear?"
"Crystal," Zara replied, her tone cold but cooperative. She wasn't here to make friends, but she also wasn't foolish enough to start a fight.
They were led through the sanctuary, Zara's sharp eyes noting the details. The people here seemed well-fed, their clothing clean. "The Commander wants to see you," she said.
Zara followed her to a large, fortified building in the center of the sanctuary. Inside, she was led to an office where Commander Kade waited. He was a man in his early forties, his sharp features softened by a calculating smile.
"Zara Kincaid," he said, standing. "I've heard of you. A strategist, a survivor, and by the looks of it, a troublemaker."
Zara raised an eyebrow. "Is that a compliment?"
Kade chuckled. "It's a warning. In Ravenwood, everyone earns their keep. Let's see if you can."
