Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 318

The map on the console flickered, its ancient technology humming faintly. Zara squinted at the holographic display, which revealed a sprawling network of interconnected chambers. The spiraling glyph was marked at the very heart of the labyrinth, glowing ominously like a beacon of dread.

"This place goes deeper than I thought," Zara murmured, tracing the path with her finger. "The glyph is here—in the central chamber."

Callum leaned in, his jaw tightening. "And you think it's worth risking all of us to find it? That thing back there nearly fried your brain, Zara."

"I know the risks," she shot back. "But whatever's down there is the key to understanding who's behind these experiments. If we turn back now, we'll stay blind—and we'll die blind."

The team exchanged uneasy glances. Mia, ever the skeptic, crossed her arms. "And what if this is a trap? That... creature could've been leading us straight to our graves."

Zara met her gaze, unwavering. "If it is, we'll deal with it. But if we ignore this, more of those hybrids will surface—and we won't stand a chance. We move out in five."

Andre adjusted his rifle, nodding silently in agreement. The rest of the team, though reluctant, began prepping their gear. Zara took a moment to steady herself, the images from the creature's mental attack still swirling in her mind. The glyph wasn't just a destination—it was a warning, a line drawn in the sand.

The group descended further into the labyrinth, their footsteps echoing through the cold, metallic corridors. The air grew heavier, charged with an unnatural energy that set Zara's nerves on edge. Each chamber they passed bore signs of the horrors that had unfolded here: shattered glass tubes, bloodstains smeared across the walls, and the occasional lifeless husk of a failed experiment.

"Whoever built this place had no regard for life," Andre muttered, scanning the shadows.

"They weren't just experimenting," Zara said grimly. "They were building weapons."

Suddenly, the sound of distant footsteps echoed through the corridor. Zara held up a hand, signaling the team to halt. The steps were slow, deliberate, and growing louder.

"Lights out," she whispered, and the team doused their flashlights.

They pressed themselves against the walls, weapons at the ready. The footsteps drew closer, and a figure emerged from the shadows. It was humanoid, but its movements were jerky, as though it was being controlled. Its head tilted unnaturally as it sniffed the air.

"What is that thing?" Mia hissed under her breath.

Before anyone could answer, the figure snapped its head toward their hiding spot and let out a bone-chilling screech.

"Open fire!" Zara commanded, her blades flashing as she charged.

Bullets tore through the air as the team engaged the creature. It moved with terrifying speed, dodging and lunging with mechanical precision. Zara's blades found their mark, severing one of its limbs, but it barely slowed down.

"We're outmatched!" Callum shouted, reloading frantically.

"Keep moving!" Zara barked, slashing at the creature again. "We can't fight it here!"

The team retreated down the corridor, the creature in relentless pursuit. Zara glanced at the map in her HUD, the glowing glyph seeming farther away than ever.

"We don't stop until we reach the central chamber," she yelled. "That's our only shot!"

As the labyrinth twisted and turned, the team pushed forward, the creature's unearthly screeches echoing behind them. Each step brought them closer to the glyph—and the answers they so desperately needed.
