Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 324

The air was thick with dust and the acrid tang of burning circuits. Zara crouched behind a crumbled console, her heart hammering as the debris settled around her. The team regrouped in the wreckage, their faces etched with exhaustion and dread. The explosion had done its job—mostly. The hub was destroyed, but whatever tethered the creatures to the glowing glyphs had adapted.

Andre approached, his shotgun slung over his shoulder and sweat streaking his soot-covered face. "Tell me that blast did something. Anything."

Zara met his gaze, her expression grim. "It disrupted them… briefly. But now they're—changing."

Her words hung in the stale air as the team turned their eyes to the shifting darkness. The creatures were no longer the erratic, feral beasts they had been moments before. They moved slower now, their glowing glyphs dimmer, but there was a frightening deliberation in their movements. It was as if the destruction of the hub had pushed them to evolve.

Mia knelt beside Zara, clutching her injured arm, blood seeping through the torn sleeve. "They're regrouping. We need to move before they finish… whatever that is."

Callum, limping but steady, scanned the area with his rifle. "Easier said than done. The blast caved in most of the exit tunnels. Unless you have a drill in your pack, we're stuck."

Zara pulled up her holographic map, the device flickering with interference from the EMP. The pathways were a tangled mess of collapsed corridors, but one faint signal stood out—a possible exit deeper within the labyrinth. She pointed to the flickering marker.

"There. It's a long shot, but it's the only chance we've got. We stick together and move fast. No more surprises."

Andre gave a short nod, his expression grim. "Let's hope whatever's down there isn't worse than what's up here."

The team pressed forward, their steps careful and weapons ready. The tunnels were eerily quiet now, the distant echoes of the creatures' guttural growls growing fainter. It was as if the labyrinth itself was holding its breath.

Zara led the way, her blade glinting in the faint light of her shoulder lamp. The air grew colder, the walls damp with condensation. Every step felt heavier, the oppressive silence gnawing at their nerves.

Suddenly, the faint hum of machinery reached Zara's ears. She held up a fist, signaling the team to stop. Ahead, the tunnel opened into a massive chamber, illuminated by a soft blue glow.

The room was filled with pods—rows upon rows of them, lining the walls like a grotesque hive. Inside each pod was a creature, suspended in a viscous liquid, their glyphs pulsing faintly.

"Is this… where they're made?" Mia whispered, her voice trembling.

Zara's stomach churned. "It's worse. It's where they're waiting."

Before anyone could respond, the chamber trembled. The pods began to crack, the fluid within spilling out in thick streams. One by one, the creatures stirred, their glowing eyes snapping open.

"Run," Zara hissed, her voice sharp as a blade.

And then the hive came alive.
