The hum of Vera's extraction vehicle barely masked the chaos Zara and Callum left behind. Smoke curled into the night sky, mingling with the acrid scent of gunpowder and burning metal. As the armored van sped down the darkened road, Zara slumped against the wall, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
"That was cutting it close," Callum muttered, inspecting a graze on his arm. "Gabriel's getting too comfortable playing the predator. Next time, he might get lucky."
Zara wiped blood—thankfully not hers—from her cheek and glared at him. "Then we make sure there isn't a next time. Gabriel's leash is short. If we take out his handler, we cripple the Syndicate's operations in this sector."
Vera's voice crackled over the intercom. "Speaking of handlers, I've been digging. Gabriel answers directly to a woman named Selena Rourke. Former military, now running Syndicate logistics. She's the one funneling resources into the western zones."
Zara straightened, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten. "Rourke. Where is she?"
"Last intel places her at an off-grid compound north of the city. Security's tight, but if anyone can breach it..." Vera let the sentence hang.
"That's a suicide mission," Callum said, leaning forward. "Zara, we barely made it out tonight. Going after Rourke won't just bring Gabriel—it'll bring the entire Syndicate down on us."
Zara's gaze was steely. "Then we hit them before they're ready. Rourke's the key. If we take her out, Gabriel loses his supply chain, and the Syndicate loses its foothold here. We need to end this."
Callum sighed, knowing there was no changing her mind once she was set on a course. "Fine. But if this goes south, I'm not dying in some Syndicate bunker."
The van jolted as it hit a pothole, drawing Zara's attention to the faint glow of city lights on the horizon. She leaned her head back against the cold metal wall, her mind drifting to the faces she'd seen earlier that day—the innocent survivors holed up in makeshift shelters, terrified of the Syndicate's reach.
This wasn't just about revenge anymore. It was about giving people a chance to breathe, to live without the shadow of oppression looming over them.
As the vehicle screeched to a halt outside their safe house, Vera greeted them, tablet in hand. "You're not going to , Zara. The compound's got drone surveillance, thermal sensors, and a full squad of Syndicate mercenaries on standby."
Zara smirked, rolling her shoulders to work out the stiffness. "Good. That means they're hiding something worth taking."
"Or protecting something worth dying for," Callum grumbled.
Ignoring him, Zara strode into the safe house, stripping off her gear and heading for the planning table. Maps and blueprints were spread across its surface, courtesy of Vera's reconnaissance.
"Tomorrow," Zara said, her voice firm, "we infiltrate. We hit hard, take out Rourke, and send a message. The Syndicate isn't untouchable."
As the team exchanged uneasy glances, Zara's determination burned brighter than ever. The war wasn't over, but the first blow of their counterstrike was about to land.
