The gates of the fortress groaned open as Zara led the group forward. The mask, now hanging from her belt, felt unnaturally heavy. Every step she took seemed to echo in the unnatural silence, as though the very air within the structure absorbed sound.
"Zara," Callum whispered, his eyes darting to the jagged walls. "This place... it's alive. Look."
Creeping vines lined the walls, pulsating faintly as if they were veins pumping some unholy energy. Their movement wasn't random; it was deliberate, almost predatory. Selena Rourke, still bound but eerily calm, smirked.
"Feeling uncomfortable?" she teased. "The fortress is alive, you know. It feeds on fear and doubt. Try to keep your mind steady."
"Quiet," Zara snapped, though her own resolve was faltering. She gripped the hilt of her knife tighter, her senses on high alert.
The corridor widened into a cavernous chamber, its ceiling lost in shadow. In the center stood a throne carved from obsidian, flanked by two massive braziers glowing with an unnatural green fire. On the throne sat a figure cloaked in black, its face obscured by a veil.
"Welcome," the figure said, its voice a low, resonant rumble. "Zara Kincaid. You have brought the Mask of Deception to its rightful place."
Zara stopped several feet from the throne, her heart pounding. "Who are you? And what do you want with me?"
The figure leaned forward slightly, its veil shimmering like smoke. "I am the Keeper of Lies, the guardian of the Syndicate's secrets. And you, my dear, have stepped into the heart of their deception."
Selena chuckled softly behind her gag. "Told you the fun was just beginning."
Ignoring her, Zara squared her shoulders. "I'm not here to play games. Tell me what I need to know about the Syndicate's plans."
The Keeper gestured toward the mask. "You already hold the key. The mask reveals truths, but only to those brave enough to confront their own lies."
"What does that mean?" Callum demanded, stepping beside Zara.
The Keeper's gaze shifted to him. "It means you must wear the mask and face the truths you've hidden—even from yourself. Only then will the Syndicate's web of lies unravel."
Zara's grip tightened on the mask. The memory of the hall of mirrors flashed in her mind. Could she risk losing herself in its power again?
"You don't have to do this," Callum said softly, his hand brushing her arm.
"Yes, I do," Zara replied, her voice firm. She turned back to the Keeper. "What happens if I fail?"
"You will not leave this fortress," the Keeper said simply.
With a deep breath, Zara lifted the mask to her face once more. The world around her dissolved into darkness, and she felt herself falling.
This time, she landed in a field of white, the stark emptiness stretching endlessly in all directions.
"Zara," a familiar voice called out.
She turned sharply, her breath catching as she saw a figure from her past step forward—someone she never expected to see again.
The truth she had been avoiding was finally coming for her.
