Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 373

The group moved cautiously through the fractured tunnels, the air heavy with dust and tension. The detonation had done its job, sealing the creature beneath rubble, but Zara couldn't shake the feeling that this was far from over.

Rowan glanced at her as they reached a temporary clearing where Marcus and his team waited. The survivors huddled together, their eyes darting nervously to the shadowed passageways.

Marcus stepped forward, his face lined with exhaustion. "Did you get it?"

Zara wiped sweat and grime from her face, her voice measured. "We trapped it. Whether it's dead or not isn't something I'm sticking around to find out."

A murmur of relief swept through the group, but Marcus's expression remained wary. "Trapped isn't good enough if it means it can dig its way out. That thing has already taken down two safe houses. If it comes back, we're as good as dead."

Rowan interjected, his voice sharp. "You could always stay here and wait for it to confirm. I'm sure that'll end well."

Zara shot him a warning glance before addressing Marcus. "Look, we've done what you asked. The tunnel's collapsed, and you have time to relocate. Arguing about what-ifs won't change the outcome."

Marcus hesitated, his gaze flickering between Zara and Rowan. Finally, he sighed. "Fine. But if that thing resurfaces, it's on you."

Ignoring the jab, Zara turned to the group. "We've bought you time, but staying here isn't safe. Gather your things and move to the fallback location we discussed. Quickly."

The survivors began to move, their fear lending speed to their actions. Zara scanned the faces around her, noting the cracks in their resolve. These people weren't fighters—they were stragglers clinging to survival in a world that had no mercy.

As the group prepared to leave, Rowan stepped beside her. "You really think we'll hold it off for good?"

Zara exhaled deeply. "I don't know. But I do know that standing still in this world is a death sentence. We keep moving. Always."

Before Rowan could reply, a sharp crack echoed from deeper within the tunnels. Zara tensed, her hand instinctively moving to her holster.

"What was that?" Marcus asked, his voice tight.

"Not good," Zara muttered, gesturing for silence. She crept toward the sound, Rowan at her side. The others stayed behind, their breaths held.

As they reached a bend in the tunnel, Zara signaled for Rowan to halt. She peered around the corner, her pulse quickening at the sight before her.

The rubble they'd used to collapse the passage was shifting. A faint, rhythmic pounding resonated through the ground, sending tremors up her spine.

"It's trying to dig out," Rowan whispered.

Zara nodded grimly. "Looks like we didn't buy as much time as we thought."

Turning back to the group, Zara spoke quickly. "It's not over. We need to move. Now."

Marcus's face fell, but he didn't argue. The survivors scrambled to gather their belongings as Zara and Rowan took point, leading them deeper into the labyrinth.

As they moved, Zara couldn't shake the sense that the creature wasn't just a mindless predator—it was hunting them with purpose.
