Her short black hair, damp with sweat, clung to her forehead. She wiped it away with her gloved hand, surveying her surroundings. The symbols on the trees had stopped glowing, but their faint outlines were still visible, marking the forest as the King's domain. Her reflection flickered in the surface of a nearby puddle, the sharp lines of her jaw and determined gaze reminding her of the mission she couldn't abandon.
She moved silently, her thigh-high boots pressing into the soft earth. Every shadow seemed alive, twisting and writhing, a reflection of the chaos in her mind. Zara's sharp instincts warned her she wasn't alone. Somewhere, out there, the King's enforcers waited, watching, ready to strike.
A faint noise—almost imperceptible—broke her concentration. The soft crunch of leaves. Zara froze, her muscles tensing. She crouched low, her hand hovering near the tactical holster strapped across her chest. She'd faced worse odds before, but something about this silence made her feel as though the forest itself was hunting her.
"Come out," she demanded, her voice steady but edged with steel.
From the shadows emerged a figure—tall and armored, with a smooth black helmet reflecting the faint moonlight. The enforcer's weapon was drawn, a sleek rifle humming faintly with energy. Zara's eyes darted to the weapon, calculating her chances.
"You're trespassing," the enforcer said, their voice distorted by the helmet.
"And you're in my way," Zara shot back, her tone defiant.
The enforcer tilted their head, a silent challenge. "Surrender. The King is merciful to those who serve."
Zara smirked. "Tell him I don't do mercy."
The enforcer moved first, raising their rifle, but Zara was faster. She ducked to the side, her pistol already drawn. The sharp crack of her gunshot echoed through the forest, followed by the dull thud of a body hitting the ground. Zara approached the fallen enforcer cautiously, her weapon trained on them.
The helmet was cracked, revealing a human face beneath. A young man, his eyes wide with fear and pain. Zara hesitated. This wasn't a mindless servant of the King—it was someone coerced into service. Her grip on the pistol tightened, but she lowered it.
"You don't have to die for him," she said quietly.
The man coughed, his hand weakly reaching for her. "You don't know… what he is," he rasped. "He… sees everything."
