Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 434

The damp, foreboding corridor stretched on, an endless labyrinth of iron bars and crumbling stone. Each step the team took echoed ominously, as though the dungeon itself was alive, feeding off their presence. Rook led the way, his rifle raised, scanning for movement. The flickering torchlight on the walls cast long, wavering shadows, their distorted shapes dancing like specters.

"This place feels... wrong," Viper muttered, her voice barely a whisper. She clutched the ancient tome tightly, its faint pulsing more pronounced now, resonating in sync with the cold stone walls.

"Stay sharp," Rook ordered, his tone as steady as ever. "We've seen what this place can throw at us. Don't let your guard down."

Ghost lingered near the edges of the corridor, his movements silent, his eyes darting to every cell. Most were empty, but occasionally, something stirred—faint whispers, a shifting shadow, the glint of eyes that vanished the moment his flashlight touched them.

"Anyone else hear that?" Shadow's voice broke the uneasy silence.

"Hear what?" Bulwark grunted, adjusting his grip on his heavy weapon.

"Whispers," she replied, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the darkness.

"They're not just whispers," Viper said, her voice trembling. "It's... like they're trying to talk to me. Through the book."

Before anyone could respond, a loud clang echoed through the corridor. The sound reverberated like a gong, making the team freeze. Slowly, one of the iron cell doors creaked open on its own. A deep, guttural groan emanated from the shadows within.

"Movement," Ghost hissed, raising his weapon.

From the darkness emerged a hulking figure, its body wrapped in rusted chains. Its eyes glowed faintly, an unnatural green light, and its movements were slow but deliberate. As it stepped fully into the light, the team could see its grotesque form—rotting flesh barely clinging to its massive frame, its arms ending in jagged, bladed implements.

"Engage!" Rook shouted.

Bulwark opened fire first, his machine gun roaring as a hail of bullets slammed into the creature. It staggered but kept advancing, swinging its bladed arms in wide arcs. Shadow aimed for its glowing eyes, her shots precise, but they only seemed to enrage it further.

"Fall back!" Rook commanded, firing controlled bursts as the team retreated down the corridor.

The creature let out a deafening roar, shaking the very walls of the dungeon. More cell doors began to open, and from within emerged smaller, faster creatures—humanoid but twisted, their bodies contorted and unnatural.

"Viper, the book!" Ghost shouted. "Do something!"

"I don't know what to do!" she yelled back, frantically flipping through the pages. The tome's symbols glowed brighter, the pulsing now almost deafening in her mind.

As the creatures closed in, Viper stopped abruptly, her eyes wide. "There's a passage here—something about binding them."

"Then do it!" Rook snapped, covering her as she began chanting the strange, guttural words.

The air grew heavy, the temperature dropping sharply. The runes on the walls began to glow faintly, and the creatures hesitated, their movements slowing.

"Whatever you're doing, it's working!" Bulwark shouted, unloading his weapon on the larger creature, now visibly struggling against some unseen force.

With a final, desperate shout, Viper slammed the tome shut. The glowing runes on the walls flared brightly, and the creatures let out agonized screams as they were pulled back into the cells by invisible hands. The iron doors slammed shut behind them, the dungeon falling silent once more.

Panting, the team regrouped.

"Good work," Rook said, nodding at Viper.

"This place is alive," she whispered, clutching the tome. "And it wants us dead."

"Then we keep moving," Rook said, glancing at the corridor ahead, where another heavy iron door awaited. "Stay ready. The worst is yet to come."
