The faint glow of wall sconces from above had vanished, leaving the soldiers to rely on their headlamps. The light barely penetrated the oppressive darkness, illuminating only a few feet ahead. The silence was suffocating, broken only by the faint hum of energy vibrating through the walls.
"I'm starting to think this staircase might not have an end," Ghost muttered, his voice low but tense.
"It'll end," Rook replied. His tone was clipped, but there was an undertone of unease even he couldn't mask. "And when it does, we'll need to be ready."
Viper's grip on the tome tightened as she struggled to keep her balance on the uneven steps. The book's glow had dimmed, but its pulse was stronger than ever, resonating like a heartbeat. "There's something ahead. I can feel it."
Shadow, walking just behind, glanced over her shoulder. "Define 'something.'"
Viper shook her head. "It's… pulling us. The energy isn't hostile, but it's overwhelming. Almost like it's alive."
The team exchanged uneasy glances but pressed on. After what felt like an eternity, the staircase ended abruptly, spilling them into a massive circular chamber. "This doesn't look welcoming," Bulwark said, hefting his weapon. "What's the book say, Viper?"
Viper flipped through the glowing pages, her brows furrowing. "It's a map," she said after a moment. "This chamber… it's a gateway. But we'll need to unlock it."
"Great," Ghost muttered. "What's the catch?"
As if in response, the runes on the obelisk flared to life, bathing the chamber in a cold, blue light. The floor trembled, and from the shadows emerged a series of figures. Unlike the humanoid creatures above, these were angular and metallic, their limbs jointed and sharp. Their glowing eyes fixed on the team with mechanical precision.
"Positions!" Rook barked, the team forming a defensive circle.
The constructs moved as one, their movements unnervingly fluid. Shadow fired first, her bullet ricocheting harmlessly off one creature's metallic exterior. "They're armored!" she shouted.
Bulwark unleashed a barrage of heavy fire, the rounds denting the constructs but failing to stop them. Ghost darted forward, planting an explosive charge on one before retreating. The blast shredded its limbs, but the others advanced undeterred.
"The runes!" Viper shouted. "Target the obelisk. It's controlling them!"
Rook didn't hesitate. "Shadow, Ghost, cover Viper. Bulwark, on me."
As Viper began chanting, the obelisk's light intensified, the runes shifting faster. The constructs' movements became erratic, their glowing eyes flickering. Rook and Bulwark provided cover, their combined fire keeping the creatures at bay.
With a final cry, Viper slammed the tome onto the obelisk. The runes pulsed once before shattering, a wave of energy ripping through the chamber. The constructs froze, their limbs locking before they crumbled to the ground.
The team stood in silence, the only sound their ragged breaths. The obelisk's light faded, revealing a new passageway carved into the wall.
"Let's move," Rook said, his voice steady despite the tension. "Whatever's ahead, it's not waiting for us."
