Viper knelt by a pool, her fingers brushing against the water's surface. She recoiled instantly. "Acid," she muttered, wiping her glove on her pants. "They're not making it easy for us."
A faint glow appeared in the distance, pulsating like a heartbeat. It illuminated a narrow path lined with sharp, uneven rocks. Ghost led the way, his movements silent as he scouted ahead. The others followed cautiously, weapons ready.
As they moved deeper, the glow grew stronger, revealing ancient carvings on the cavern walls. The depictions were grotesque—twisted humanoid figures battling monstrous beasts, their faces contorted in agony. "That has to be it," Rook said, his gaze fixed on the key. "But it's never that simple."
As if in response to his words, the ground trembled, and the streams of acid surged, forming walls that began to close in. From the shadows emerged creatures unlike anything they had faced before—amalgamations of rock and molten metal, their eyes burning with the same golden light as the lions above.
"Defensive positions!" Rook barked, raising his weapon.
The creatures charged with terrifying speed, their molten forms leaving trails of fire and acid in their wake. Bulwark unleashed a barrage of heavy rounds, creating momentary barriers between the team and the advancing creatures. Ghost darted through the chaos, reaching the pedestal. He examined the key and the surrounding mechanisms, his nimble fingers working to disarm the trap while the others held off the onslaught.
"Almost… got it!" Ghost yelled as the key released with a click.
The creatures froze, their molten forms crumbling to ash as the acid streams receded. The chamber fell silent once more, save for the team's heavy breaths.
Rook pocketed the key, his eyes scanning the chamber for their next challenge. "Let's move. The throne room is close. No turning back now."
