The team pressed on through the endless brick corridor, its dim lights casting elongated shadows along the damp walls. The sound of their boots on the uneven bricks echoed unnervingly, making it feel as if unseen entities marched alongside them.
"Does this thing ever end?" Viper grumbled, running her hand along the rough texture of the walls.
"Patience," Rook replied firmly. "This corridor isn't just a passage. It's meant to wear us down. Mentally. Stay sharp."
Shadow, walking a few paces ahead, paused suddenly. She crouched, shining her flashlight on the floor. "There's something here." Her voice was calm but carried a hint of apprehension.
The rest of the team gathered around her. Embedded into the bricks was a metallic plate engraved with an inscription in an ancient language. Ghost knelt beside Shadow, examining the inscription with his advanced scanner. The text glowed faintly on his HUD as the device translated it.
"It says, 'The past weighs heavy. Those who carry guilt will not pass,'" Ghost read aloud.
Viper raised an eyebrow. "Great. Another psychological test. Just what we needed."
Rook frowned, his mind racing. "This is more than a warning. It's a trap. If we don't figure out how to proceed, this corridor could turn into a tomb."
Bulwark tapped the wall with his massive hand. "What if it's literal? Maybe we're being judged by… I don't know, our sins?"
As if in response, a low rumble reverberated through the corridor. The lights flickered, and the bricks under their feet seemed to shift slightly.

"We don't have time for philosophy," Rook snapped. "Shadow, Ghost, any ideas?"
Shadow's sharp eyes scanned the plate again. "It's possible the corridor reacts to something—our thoughts, our emotions, maybe even our presence. We need to test it."
Ghost nodded. "I'll go first." Without hesitation, he stepped forward, his movements slow and deliberate. The corridor remained still, its oppressive silence unchanged.
Rook motioned for the others to follow. "One at a time. Stay alert."
One by one, they passed over the plate, the tension thick enough to cut. When it was Viper's turn, the corridor reacted violently. The walls groaned, and bricks began to shift and crack.
"Viper, don't move!" Rook barked.
Viper froze, her face pale. "What's happening?"
"The corridor is rejecting you," Ghost said grimly. "You must be carrying something—regret, guilt. It's triggering the mechanism."
"I'm fine!" Viper protested, but the shaking intensified. Dust rained from the ceiling, and the lights dimmed further.
"Admit it," Rook said urgently. "Whatever it is you're holding onto, let it go. Now!"
Viper clenched her fists, her voice shaking. "Fine! I—I left someone behind on my last mission. I had no choice, but it still haunts me!"
The rumbling ceased abruptly. The corridor settled, the lights steadying.
"Let's move," Rook ordered, pulling Viper along.
Ahead, the corridor ended at a solid wooden door reinforced with iron. A faint, rhythmic thudding echoed behind it.
"We're not alone," Shadow whispered.
Rook tightened his grip on his weapon. "Ready yourselves. Whatever's beyond that door, it's waiting for us."
