The room was ablaze, fire consuming everything in its path. Thick smoke curled toward the ceiling, making it difficult to breathe. Shadows danced wildly across the burning walls as the team burst into the inferno, weapons drawn.
"Eyes up! We're walking into a trap," Rook commanded, his voice sharp through the chaos.
The mission had brought them to an isolated safe house deep in enemy territory. What was meant to be a covert extraction of intel had turned into a fiery ambush. The enemy had rigged the place to burn, knowing the team would have no choice but to fight their way out.
"Ghost, find us an exit!" Rook shouted, covering his face from a falling beam.
Ghost moved quickly, his goggles slicing through the smoke. He scanned the kitchen, which was already engulfed in flames, and spotted a potential way out through a shattered window. "Exit on the west side!" he called out.
Before the team could move, a hail of gunfire erupted from the adjoining room. Bullets ricocheted off the charred furniture, forcing the team to take cover. Shadow dropped to one knee, her sniper rifle at the ready. Through the dense smoke, she saw movement—hostiles emerging from the shadows with gas masks and flamethrowers.
"They're closing in!" Shadow warned, taking a clean shot. The first enemy fell, but the others kept advancing, flames roaring from their weapons.
"Bulwark, take point!" Rook ordered.
Bulwark stepped forward, his heavy armor absorbing the brunt of the assault. With a roar, he fired his grenade launcher, the explosion sending the enemies scattering. One of the flamethrowers erupted in a fiery blast, consuming its wielder and the area around him.
"Move, move, move!" Rook barked.
The team sprinted toward the west side. Viper stayed behind for a moment, her blades glinting in the firelight as she engaged an enemy in close combat. With a swift strike, she disabled him and darted toward the exit, the heat licking at her heels.
As they reached the window, Ghost shattered the remaining glass and climbed out first, providing cover. One by one, the team followed, the roar of the fire growing louder as the structure began to collapse.
Outside, the cool night air was a stark contrast to the inferno they had just escaped. The team regrouped in the shadow of a nearby building, coughing and catching their breath.
"That wasn't just an ambush," Shadow said, her voice steady despite the chaos. She held up a charred file she had grabbed in the heat of the battle. "This was a distraction."
Rook took the file, his eyes narrowing as he scanned its contents. "Coordinates. Another location."
"And it's marked urgent," Viper added, pointing to the timestamp.
"They wanted us here to keep us from going there," Rook said, his tone grim.
"Then we don't waste any time," Ghost replied.
Rook nodded. "Gear up. Whatever's waiting for us at that location, we're not letting it slip through our fingers."
The team vanished into the night once more, leaving the flames behind as they prepared for the next confrontation.
