The forest was an endless graveyard of twisted trees and scattered bones, illuminated only by the pale glow of the moon. ZETU had ventured deeper, drawn by reports of unusual zombie behavior in this cursed stretch of land. The air was heavy with mist, muffling every sound except the faint rustle of movement ahead.
"Stay sharp," Captain Marcus Kane whispered, his shotgun gripped tightly. "This doesn't feel right."
Officer Derek "Shield" Coleman took point, his riot shield raised as a barrier against whatever lay ahead. Behind him, Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett scanned the horizon with her thermal scope, but the dense fog distorted her readings.
"I don't , Cap," Riley muttered. "Too quiet. No heat signatures, but I can feel them."
"They're here," Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro said, crouching low and examining the ground. She pointed to fresh tracks in the mud. "They've been moving in circles. It's like they're herding us."
A guttural growl pierced the silence, followed by another and another. The team froze, their weapons raised. Shapes began to emerge from the mist—shambling, lifeless forms with glowing eyes reflecting the moonlight.
"Ambush!" Kane yelled.
The horde surged forward, faster than usual. These weren't the usual mindless zombies; they moved with purpose, their movements calculated.
"Blaze! Light it up!" Kane ordered.
Jenna "Blaze" Hart unleashed a fiery blast from her flamethrower, the flames tearing through the front line of the undead. The inferno illuminated the scene: dozens of zombies closing in from all sides.
"They're flanking us!" Riley shouted, picking off targets with precise shots.
"Hold the line!" Kane barked. Shield planted his riot shield firmly into the ground, creating a bottleneck to funnel the horde. His baton swung with brutal efficiency, cracking skulls and buying the team precious seconds.
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor scrambled to deploy his drone. The feed on his tablet showed something disturbing—a cluster of zombies standing perfectly still in the distance, their glowing eyes fixed on the team. At their center was another pale figure, its gaunt face turned upward as if drawing energy from the moonlight.
"There's another one of those commanders!" Ethan yelled. "It's controlling them!"
Kane cursed under his breath. "Huntress, find a way to that thing. Quick Shot, cover her!"
Huntress nodded, darting into the shadows. Riley provided cover fire, her sniper rifle picking off zombies that strayed too close. The horde seemed endless, but the team held their ground, inching forward.
Huntress slipped through the chaos, her dual pistols blazing as she carved a path toward the pale figure. As she closed in, the creature turned its glowing eyes on her, letting out a blood-curdling scream.
The zombies froze momentarily, then surged with renewed fury.
"I'm almost there!" Huntress shouted, dodging an incoming swipe from the creature. She fired a shot directly into its chest, but it barely flinched.
"It's not going down!" she yelled.
Blaze reloaded her flamethrower. "Then we burn it to hell!"
