Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 521

The first light of dawn barely penetrated the thick, oppressive fog surrounding the ZETU team as they pressed deeper into the forest. Shadows danced between the gnarled, lifeless trees, their twisted branches resembling skeletal hands reaching toward the fading stars. The team's boots squelched in the mud, and the occasional snapping of twigs underfoot echoed unnervingly in the unnatural silence.

Captain Marcus Kane raised a fist, halting the group. His weathered face, illuminated by the pale beam of his flashlight, betrayed no fear but absolute focus. "This place doesn't feel right," he said in a low voice.

"Yeah, you think?" Officer Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett muttered, her sniper rifle at the ready. Her sharp eyes scanned the dense mist, catching faint glimpses of movement that seemed to vanish the moment she looked directly at it.

Sergeant Jenna "Blaze" Hart kept her flamethrower primed, the pilot flame flickering like a warning. "We shouldn't even be here. This fog's alive. It's toying with us."

Officer Derek "Shield" Coleman adjusted his grip on his riot shield. "Alive or not, it bleeds like everything else."

"Quiet," Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro hissed, crouching low. "Do you hear that?"

At first, it was faint—a guttural, wet scraping sound, like something dragging across the forest floor. The sound grew louder, accompanied by low, raspy moans that sent chills up their spines.

"They're close," Kane said, his voice steady. "Form up."

From the fog emerged the grotesque shapes of zombies, but these were not ordinary infected. Their bodies were elongated and distorted, their flesh marred with jagged bark-like growths. Their faces were hollowed, their mouths dripping with black ooze.

"Contact!" Kane shouted, firing his shotgun. The blast tore through one of the creatures, but instead of falling, it writhed and contorted, its limbs snapping into unnatural angles as it staggered forward again.

"Fire isn't enough!" Blaze yelled, her flamethrower igniting a cluster of the creatures. While the flames consumed their bark-like exteriors, they shrieked and reformed, their movements even more erratic.

"Brain, I need answers now!" Kane demanded.

Tech Specialist Ethan "Brain" O'Connor fumbled with his tablet, scanning the environment. "The fog—it's not just a cover. It's feeding them, binding them together. We need to disrupt the source!"

Huntress narrowed her eyes, scanning the horizon. "There." She pointed to a distant silhouette—a decaying house, its windows glowing with an ominous red light. Tendrils of mist snaked from it, spreading through the forest like veins.

"That's the epicenter," Kane said. "We move now. Blaze, Shield, cover us!"

The team pushed forward, cutting through waves of the infected. Shield's armor bore the brunt of their attacks, while Blaze unleashed a torrent of flames to keep the horde at bay. Quick Shot picked off creatures from a distance, her precision unerring even in the chaos.

As they neared the house, the air grew heavier, and the creatures more frenzied. Kane kicked in the rotting door, revealing a pulsating mass of black tendrils wrapped around an ancient artifact—a jagged stone glowing with malevolent energy.

"Blow it to hell!" Kane ordered.

Blaze set the charges, her hands steady despite the monstrous screeches surrounding them. As the team retreated, the explosion lit up the forest, shattering the artifact and sending a shockwave that dispersed the fog.

For a moment, there was silence. Then Kane spoke, his voice grim. "If this was just one source… we've got a long fight ahead."
