The night was silent, save for the faint echo of shuffling feet and low growls reverberating through the streets. The city, once alive with chaos, now seemed frozen in eerie anticipation. The swarm was advancing again, but this time, they moved strategically, like predators circling their prey.
Captain Marcus Kane surveyed the narrow, decayed alleyway where the team had taken temporary cover. Shadows flickered against the walls as the faint moonlight broke through the haze. Behind him, Lila Navarro crouched, her pistols loaded and eyes scanning the darkness.
"This is a kill zone," she whispered.
"Exactly why we need to move," Marcus replied, his voice low. "Ethan, what's ahead of us?"
The tech specialist's voice crackled through the comms. "Not good news. The swarm has split into multiple factions. The main horde is still advancing, but a smaller pack is using the alleyways to flush you out."
"How far to the nearest safe zone?" Marcus asked.
Ethan hesitated. "Two miles south. But it's a maze of tight corridors and—"
Before he could finish, a shrill screech pierced the air. A wave of sprinters surged from the darkness, their glowing eyes cutting through the gloom.
"Contact!" Marcus shouted, raising his shotgun.
The alley erupted into chaos. Lila's pistols barked, each shot precise and deadly. Marcus unloaded his shotgun into the closest zombie, its body collapsing into a heap. But the sprinters didn't relent, their emaciated forms weaving through the team's defenses.
"Back! Fall back!" Marcus ordered, firing another round.
The team retreated into a tighter corridor, the narrow walls funneling the undead into a single line. Behind them, Derek "Shield" Coleman slammed his riot shield into the ground, blocking the path and buying precious seconds.
"They're relentless!" Derek yelled, shoving a sprinter back into the mob.
Jenna "Blaze" Hart stepped forward, her flamethrower roaring to life. A wall of fire engulfed the corridor, forcing the zombies to recoil. The flames painted the alley in a hellish glow, but the heat didn't slow the swarm for long.
"Captain, you're boxed in!" Ethan's panicked voice echoed. "You need to move now!"
Marcus scanned the alley, his sharp eyes catching a crumbling fire escape on the side of a building.
"Up the ladder!" he barked.
Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett covered the team, her sniper rifle echoing in the night as she picked off zombies trying to flank them. One by one, the team scrambled up the rusted ladder.
Jenna was the last to ascend, her flamethrower spitting fire until the nozzle sputtered dry. She climbed as the swarm reached the base of the ladder, clawing at the metal and screeching in frustration.
Reaching the rooftop, Marcus turned to Ethan. "What's the play?"
"There's a bridge connecting this building to the next block," Ethan said. "But it's risky—half of it is gone."
Marcus looked at his team, their faces streaked with dirt and exhaustion. Below, the swarm seethed like a living ocean.
