Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 576

The ZETU team stood outside the evacuated factory, its looming structure now engulfed in unnatural darkness. The survivors were safe, but the team's unease only grew. Captain Marcus Kane stared at the impenetrable black void that consumed the building.

"They're not regular zombies," Marcus said. "This is something… worse."

Ethan "Brain" O'Connor scanned his tablet nervously. "There's no electromagnetic interference, no power anomaly. It's like the darkness is… alive. It's feeding on light."

Before the captain could respond, Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett called out from her vantage point. "We've got movement. South perimeter."

Emerging from the shadows was a procession of figures. These weren't the mindless, shambling zombies they were used to. These creatures moved with precision, their glowing eyes fixed on the team. The air grew thick, suffocating, as if the darkness itself was crawling toward them.

"Shields up!" Marcus ordered. Derek "Shield" Coleman planted himself at the front, riot shield gleaming under the dim moonlight. Jenna "Blaze" Hart stepped beside him, flamethrower hissing as she prepped for a counterattack.

The first shadow lunged, moving unnaturally fast. Blaze unleashed a burst of fire, and the creature recoiled, its form flickering and dissipating like smoke. "Light works!" she shouted.

"Then we hold this line," Marcus said. "Blaze, keep burning. Quick Shot, take out anything that tries to flank. Huntress, we need recon now!"

Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro nodded, slipping into the shadows with her tracking gear. She activated her infrared goggles, but the screen was nearly blank. The heat signatures of the shadow zombies were faint, barely there, as if they weren't fully part of this world.

Inside the darkened factory, Lila discovered a chilling sight. At the center of the void, a massive creature loomed, far larger than the others. Its body pulsated with black smoke, and its glowing eyes burned brighter than the rest. It was tethered to the factory floor by tendrils of shadow, feeding on the darkness around it.

"We've got a big one," Lila whispered into her comms. "I think it's controlling the others."

Ethan's voice crackled back. "If that's the source, we need to destroy it. But how do we kill something that's barely physical?"

"I'll figure it out," Lila said.

Outside, the team held their ground as waves of shadow zombies attacked. Blaze's flamethrower roared, carving swaths of light through the darkness. Derek's shield held firm, but the creatures were relentless.

"They're testing us," Marcus muttered.

"Captain, we don't have time for a stand-off," Ethan warned. "Whatever's inside that factory, it's spreading. We have to end this now."

Lila's voice cut through the chatter. "I've got an idea. If light works, then we'll blind it. Bring in the portable floodlights."

Ethan nodded, scrambling to deploy the team's high-intensity floodlights. As the beams powered on, the shadows shrieked, their forms unraveling in the harsh light.

Inside, Lila faced the massive creature. She hurled a flash grenade at its core. The explosion of light filled the factory, and the creature let out a deafening roar, its form disintegrating into nothingness.

As the darkness lifted, the team regrouped. The factory was eerily quiet now, the shadow zombies gone.

"Let's hope we don't see anything like that again," Marcus said grimly.

But Ethan stared at his tablet, his face pale. "This isn't over. That thing wasn't just feeding on light—it was a signal. And something answered."
