I AM NOT THE MAIN CHARACTER, PLEASE STOP GIVING ME QUESTS Chapter 59

Quest Update: "Vythrax’s Trial of Bread and Bravery"

Objective: Survive Vythrax’s final trial, which is probably worse than shadows and baking.

Reward: Access to the Heart of Glimmerfen, maybe some answers.

Failure: You’re toast. Literally.

The rune circle’s glow faded, leaving the cavern dim and my confidence dimmer. The air reeked of burnt shadow, fresh bread, and my crew’s barely veiled contempt. I stood, butter knife in one hand, Wyrm’s Quill in the other, both glowing like they knew secrets I didn’t. My coat was a wreck—torn, singed, glittering like a cheap disco ball—but surviving the Shadow Wyrm gave me a spark. I was Cecil Dreggs, former Loafbearer, current... quill-wielding weirdo. The quill’s buzz was stronger now, like it was whispering, You’re not that useless. My crew, though, wasn’t ready to crown me hero of the day.

Lilith spun her scythe, her glare sharper than its blade. "You survived. Barely. Don’t expect applause."

Vorren sheathed his knife, muttering, "Still taking your coat if you die."

Jex, apple-less, fidgeted like a kid caught stealing cookies. "Can we go home? This place is creepier than my uncle’s basement."

Yvra adjusted her dress, still impossibly spotless. "One more trial, Cecil. Fail, and I’ll bury you in royal paperwork for eternity." Her voice was cold, but her eyes scanned the cavern, alert.

Mister Fog floated above, sipping tea that smelled like burnt dreams and vague omens. "The quill’s power is tied to your heart, Cecil. Find it, or we’re doomed."

Sir Thrain, flour-coated, raised his lance. "For the crown’s honor!" He tripped over a coin, crashing into a bone pile with a CLATTER. "Dishonorable debris!" he groaned, helmet askew.

Sir Gorrim, mustache tangled with ribbon and yeast, waved his broken hilt. "By valor’s grace!" He slipped, landing in ash with a WHUMP. "Cursed dust!" he wheezed, flailing.

I twirled the quill, forcing a grin. "Two trials down, one to go. I’m basically a legend now." The quill buzzed, warm in my hand, like it was cheering me on.

Lilith snorted. "You’re a legend at tripping."

Vythrax’s tail slammed the ground with a BOOM, silencing us. "Silence, worms! The final trial tests your worth. Enter the Vault of Crumbs and claim the Heart of Glimmerfen!" The cavern floor cracked open with a RUMBLE, revealing a staircase spiraling into darkness. Runes glowed along the steps, pulsing like they were judging my all life choices.

I gulped, knife and quill trembling. "A vault? That sounds... trap-heavy... but it is not always what you expect... right?"

Vythrax’s eyes gleamed, sparks flying. "The Heart holds King Valthorne’s secrets. Only the worthy may touch it. Fail, and my flames await." Its jaws opened, a fiery glow promising a very crispy end.

I glanced at my crew. "Any volunteers to go first?"

Lilith smirked. "You’re the ’hero,’ Cecil. Lead or bleed."

Vorren grunted. "Don’t trip."

Jex whimpered. "I’m out of apples!"

Yvra’s dagger glinted. "Move, or I’ll carve you a path."

Mister Fog sipped his tea. "The quill will guide you. Hopefully."

Thrain and Gorrim, tangled in bones, shouted, "For valor!" and promptly fell again with a CLUNK. "Dishonorable piles!" Gorrim gasped.

I sighed, quill glowing. "Fine. Let’s do this." I led the way down the stairs, boots echoing with a THUD-THUD. The air grew colder, smelling of dust and ancient secrets. The staircase opened into a chamber—the Vault of Crumbs. Its walls were carved with bread-shaped runes, glowing faintly, and in the center, a pedestal held a glowing orb: the Heart of Glimmerfen, pulsing like a loaf-shaped star.

"Whoa," I whispered, the quill buzzing like it was excited. "That’s... shiny."

A voice boomed, deep and ancient, not Vythrax’s. "WHO SEEKS THE HEART?" Runes flared, and a spectral figure appeared—a knight in ancient armor, holding a loaf-shaped shield. "I am Valthorne’s Echo. Prove your worth!"

I raised the quill, trying to sound confident. "Cecil Dreggs, quill guy! I baked a loaf, stabbed a shadow, and I’m here for the Heart!"

The Echo’s eyes glowed. "Answer my riddle, or face oblivion!" It spoke: "What is bread without heart, yet heart without bread?"

I blinked, scratching my head. "Uh... a sandwich?"

The Echo roared, shaking the vault. "Fool! Solve it, or perish!" Shadows swirled, forming spectral knights that lunged with a WHOOSH.

I dodged, knife glowing. "Riddles? I’m terrible at riddles!" I slashed, dispersing a knight with a POOF. The quill flared, and I felt my old Loafbearer spark, faint but real. "Okay, heart... love? Bread needs love to be good!"

The Echo paused. "Close. Speak truer."

Lilith slashed a shadow with her scythe, sparks flying with a CRACKLE. "Cecil, think or die!"

Vorren punched a knight, dispersing it with a HISS. "Say something smart for once!"

Jex threw a coin, missing with a PING. "I’m so useless!" he wailed, ducking.

Yvra’s dagger pinned a shadow to the wall with a THWACK. "Answer, or I’ll answer for you."

Mister Fog’s tea steamed. "The quill knows. Listen to it."

Thrain swung his lance, hitting a rune with a CRACK. "For the crown!" He tripped, rolling down the stairs with a CLUNK. Gorrim followed, slipping with a SPLAT. "By valor’s grace!"

I gripped the quill, its glow warm. "Bread without heart is just dough. Heart without bread is just... hunger. Together, they’re life!" The quill flared, blinding, and the Echo nodded.

"Worthy," it said. The shadows vanished, and the Heart glowed brighter. I reached for it, but the vault shook with a RUMBLE. Vythrax’s roar echoed from above. "YOU DARE?"

I grabbed the Heart, the quill buzzing wildly. Light exploded, and flashes hit me—Valthorne baking for peace, his power in the quill. My power. I wasn’t just a failure.

Quest Complete: "Vythrax’s Trial of Bread and Bravery"

Reward: The Heart of Glimmerfen, a spark of purpose.

Vythrax burst through the ceiling with a CRASH, scales glinting. "WORM! YOU CLAIM MY PRIZE?"

I held the Heart, quill glowing like a star. "Yeah, and I’m keeping it!" My crew rallied, weapons ready, as Vythrax’s jaws opened, promising a fiery fight.
