Lis was very interested in the elemental magic statues patrolling the Floating City, carefully observing the one slowly moving ahead.
As the best guards for mages, magic statues were standard in many Mage Towers.
Because mages generally had frail bodies, in the absence of teammates from other Extraordinary professions, the statues often served as the vanguard for mages.
At the same time, since each mage specialized in different types of spells, they would design and create statues to compensate for their combat weaknesses.
Even those mages who were adept at crafting statues could produce supplementary statues that coordinated with them during combat to attack enemies.
Lis also had some knowledge on crafting statues, and Mr. Stephens had information on statue crafting as well, but it was all of basic level.
This might be quite precious for a Gold-level Mage, but for a Legendary Mage, it was really just average.
The First Magic Workshop of Mr. Stephens didn't have many powerful statues either; after casually creating a few statues, he lost interest and threw all of them into storage.
The reason Lis knew all this so clearly was because he had taken those statues from the storage, and also asked Mr. Stephens about them out of curiosity.
Joyce, observing Lis's focused expression, faintly saw a resemblance to his brother Brandon.
He had looked exactly when he first encountered these elemental magic statues, his face full of surprise.
Joyce wasn't particularly interested in these statues; he and Brandon had suffered a lot at their hands when they first arrived.
If he didn't think about the future descendants of the Kane family taking control of this Floating City, treating these elemental statues as precious property, he would've dismantled them long ago.
After all, he had experimented before; those Legendary magic statues wouldn't leave their posts due to disturbances outside, making a diversion impossible.
"Uncle Joyce, even if they are Legendary elemental statues, they couldn't possibly stop your progress, right?"
Lis seemed to realize something and voiced his question.
After all, Joyce was a Legendary Shadow Assassin, and even if he wasn't a match in direct combat against Legendary elemental statues, he should be able to infiltrate using the power of the Shadow Plane, right?
A wry smile emerged on Joyce's face as he glanced at Lis and said,
"You think I haven't tried?"
"After I attained Legendary status, I was full of confidence and thought it would be no problem."
"Only after attempting did I realize that the Legendary elemental statues were merely the most obvious defensive measure. Even if I temporarily bypassed those statues, inside there were various special magic traps and alert arrays that would attract the outside statues once triggered. Moreover, the internal corridors had very strong and tough magic shields."
"These defense measures are different from those in the buildings outside; they must be arrangements made by the City Lord of the Floating City, connected with the magic power source of the entire Floating City, making it practically impossible to break through in a short time."
Lis nodded awkwardly.
Well, if a Floating City's defenses could be silently breached by a Legendary Assassin that easily, it could hardly be called the pinnacle of magical intelligence and the strongest war fortress.
A vibration came from behind; Lis quickly turned to look.
The black cat that had been lying on the magic circuit of a house wall was now nowhere to be seen.
Surprisingly, the magic circuit on that house had obviously brightened, and even the two-story building began to be enveloped in a layer of pale white Spirit Light.
Lis stepped forward, trying to touch the layer of Spirit Light in front of him.
It felt somewhat tough, as if resisting the entry of Lis's palm.
But with just a bit more force, the Spirit Light in front of him instantly collapsed, turning into twinkling specks of light.
This... was it a Magic Shield?
It seemed far too fragile, even weaker than a Basic Magic Shield, possessing no protective capability whatsoever.
As Lis was puzzling over this, the magic circuit on the wall in front of him flickered dimly a couple of times, then faded away.
The figure of the black cat materialized on the ground in front of Lis, looking up at him, its four stubby legs pacing, and then with a powerful push, it leaped onto Lis's shoulder.
Seeing the black cat , Lis could tell that the recent unusual situation was controlled by the black cat.
The black cat licked its paw, speaking somewhat morosely,
"I was able to successfully control that house through the magic pattern circuit just now, but only that one."
"The magic pattern circuits in this Floating City must have a specially designed system, with clear separations and protective measures between the circuits of different buildings."
"Although I could control the magic pattern circuit of that house for a short while, I couldn't use the circuit pathways to affect other places' circuits."
Lis nodded; it seemed their previous plan wouldn't be of any use.
According to the black cat's explanation, although the magic pattern circuits of the entire Floating City were connected, the Floating City's hub controlled the entire city through the pattern circuits; however, this control was unidirectional.
The entire network of magic circuits could control from the top down, but couldn't be hacked from a lower-level circuit to seize control of the Floating City from the top up.
This limitation even prevented the black cat from affecting circuits of the same level.
