"You- Why?"
Serena looked up at him with utter confusion, She couldn't help but ask why in disbelief.
She can't see any logic in this, Max's company is on the verge of bankruptcy and without millions of capital injection it would fall in just 1 or 2 days.
His family and he are also having issues, So they might not be willing to help him; not to mention, even if they were not fighting, taking out hundreds of Millions is hard for them without causing straining the family relationship.
She was nearly breaking her capital chain by taking 100 Million UC like this. There are just enough funds for a week or two; after that, she too would be in the same boat as Max.
But in her case, she has the support of family behind her plus confidence in her own abilities that would not happen, the courtesy Max does not have.
So didn't him taking her money be the most logical choice? At least that's what she thought and hence why she decided to come here to break up their engagement, giving him money.
"Why? I don't know really, There is no place for logic and reason in love."
Max held her hand firmly as his infatuated eyes were staring at her in endless love and affection as he explained the reason or lack of it to her.
As cold as Serena was, she couldn't handle being stared at with this intensity, She turned her head to avoid making eye contact.
However, her ears perked up hearing his explanation but this just made her even more confused.
"But -"
"No buts, Tell me did you bring your chequebook with you?"
Serena wanted to say something but Max cut her off as he asked her about the chequebook.
"....Oh yes, Here write whatever price you want, I already signed it."1
Serena took a second to understand why he was asking about her checkbook but then it clicked.
Of course, She promised him 110 million UC just now, So it was reasonable that the previous 100 Million cheque was discarded.
Learning this other than being sad or disappointed she was rather glad, At least now she can see the logic in it, easing her worries.
So she slipped her hands from his and just reached out in her purse as he pulled out her chequebook, then took the blank signed cheque out of it, handing it to Max
"Thank you."
Max knew she misunderstood, but it was good for him, so he did not bother to explain it to her.
He hurriedly took the cheque from her hands and started writing an amount in black space in front of her, making the guilt in her heart finally ease down a little.
"That's enough compensation, Is this okay with you?"
Max, after he was done, pulled up the cheque in front of her to show it asking if the amount he wrote was not too much.
"Have you lost your mind?"
However, when Serena looked at the cheque, a frown appeared on her smooth temple as she coldly looked at Max before questioning his sanity in a low but sharp bone-chilling voice.
For a moment she had an urge to slap this madman across the room, After all he seems to have lost his mind.
Because on the cheque it was not 110 million she expected rather there was just 999,999/- UC written on it.
That was not even a million UC, heck the stuff on his body was worth more than the amount he wrote.
Seeing this, She couldn't help but think that he was just making fun of her. It was his way of embarrassing her this way.
If Max did not give her a reasonable excuse for his action then she would ignore the goodwill between them and just break off the engagement without giving him a face.
"Yeah, I lost my mind a long time ago. *Chuckle* Why do you think I fell in love with you?"
Max completely ignored the gunpowder keg that was about to set right in front of him as if he was not afraid of death, Rather responded to her with a counter question while chuckling as if she didn't just threaten him rather told him a funny joke.
"....."
Serena didn't open her mouth, She did not trust herself to not say something she can't take back in anger but her tightly clenched fist turning her knuckles whites shows that she was barely holding herself back.
"Hey calm down I was kidding okay, Here me out."
Max seeing the time is right acted, He swiftly reached out grabbing her clenched fist in his palm as he tried to calm her down.
This time however there was an obvious struggle to pull back though she still did not use too much force to do so but it was enough to shake his hands off.
But Max, like a leach latched on to her not letting go, seeing that she helplessly stopped her struggle; however, the bone-chilling coldness in icy blue her eyes increased a lot.
"I am not making fun of you, See this is proof that you are the one who broke off the engagement, not the other way around, this way people can not make fun of you."
Max, seeing that the time is right, Gave her a soft smile as he revealed to her his intentions.
This cheque is proof that it was Serena who broke off the engagement, this way others are not gonna have any ammunition to make fun of her.
"But wouldn't they make fun of you?"
Serena's eyes softened hearing his reason and for a brief moment she felt the warm fuzzy feeling in her heart.
But this feeling didn't last long before it vanished as quickly as it appeared, rather she put focus on other important things.
"So what? Aren't I already a big joke in this city? What are they gonna say that they have not already said before? You don't have to worry about it, I will be fine."
Max didn't even take a moment as he responded to her immediately in the same casual tone.
*Pang*
Serena suddenly felt a sharp pang of pain in her heart.
