Chapter 20 - 20: Ember and Shadow
The scent of ash tainted the wind.
From the eastern hills, Lucas crouched low behind the broken stone of an old watchtower, eyes fixed on the chaos below. Smoke spiraled from the scorched trenches outside Greystone's walls, rising like black ribbons against the blood-red dawn. The battle had escalated—and the enemy had answered.
Across the battlefield, Inferna roared.
Her body burned with unnatural fire, every motion leaving trails of searing heat in the air. Her molten claws tore through Greystone's defensive lines, scattering fire and fear alike. Elira danced through the flames on Luna's back, arrows of pure wind streaking across the inferno, only to be devoured mid-flight.
Their duel painted the battlefield violently—ice and wind versus molten rage.
Kaela, farther west, tore into the second wave of apes with her saber-cat, Thunderfang. Electricity crackled around her form, each strike echoing with thunder, yet she too was kept at bay by the enemy's reinforcements.
Lucas clenched his fists. Umbra crouched beside him, tail flicking with tension, and Zephyra hovered overhead, her wings humming.
DING!

Main Objective: Survive and Repel the TideSub-Objective: Defeat the Three Generals
Lucas exhaled slowly. "It's time."
He stood, calling on the mental link between him and his companions. Umbra surged into motion like a panther released from the leash, slipping through the shadows. Zephyra dove downward, her wings crackling with static, energy building in her beak.
"We take the west," Lucas commanded. "But keep Elira in sight."
They descended from the ridge.

Luna leapt high to avoid another column of fire. Elira rolled from the saddle mid-air, twisted, and released two arrows. They struck Inferna's shoulder and flank—only to melt before piercing skin.
The ape general grinned, embers dancing across her tusked snarl. She lifted both arms and slammed them into the earth. Geysers of flame erupted.
Elira landed hard and skidded into a low crouch, a shallow burn searing her right thigh.
"Tch... this isn't working."
Luna bounded back to her, snarling.
"We need to disable her movement," Elira muttered. "If I can line up a shot to her core... just once."
She checked her quiver. Only six arrows remained, two infused with storm essence.
From the flames, Inferna charged.
Elira barely avoided a molten punch. The shockwave flung her backward. Luna lunged and managed to knock the general off-balance, fangs sinking into her thigh for a brief second.
But Inferna flared.
A burst of superheated air exploded from her form, sending Luna flying.
Elira hit the ground, smoke curling from her armor.
The general raised both arms, preparing to incinerate her.

Lightning split the sky.
A bolt of emerald energy struck Inferna in the shoulder, staggering her.
Zephyra screamed past, discharging another blast before veering away.
Lucas landed beside Elira, pulling her to her feet. "You okay?"
Elira coughed, wincing. "Just tired."
Lucas turned, eyes narrowing on Inferna. "Umbra's circling her. Let's make this count."
DING!
[Party Combat Link Activated: Elira - Kaela - Lucas]
Inferna stood, her molten chestplate cracked and leaking fire.
Lucas stepped forward, both hands raised.
"Beast Fusion."
Umbra and Zephyra shimmered.
Light swirled around him, darkness and lightning intertwining. When the glow faded, Lucas stood armored in gleaming onyx and silver. Shadow-claws extended from his fingers, wings of static energy spread from his back.
DING! [Temporary Form: Apex Beastlord - Duration: 5 Minutes]
Inferna roared.
Lucas moved.
They clashed in a whirlwind of flame and fury.

Further west, Kaela snarled as her claws scraped against obsidian armor.
Kong stood before her like a black monolith, unmoved by her strikes. The gorilla-like general carried a mace of fused bone and stone, each swing creating shockwaves.
Thunderfang darted in and out, harrying him with speed, but the beast was relentless.
Kaela's muscles ached. Her breaths came fast.
Kong slammed his mace down.
Kaela caught it with both hands, lightning exploding from her body in a desperate discharge. Kong staggered back, momentarily stunned.
She leapt high and landed a punch to his jaw.
The giant reeled.
Then roared.
Kong answered her thunder with a bellow of his own, muscles rippling.
"You want dominance?" Kaela shouted. "Then try earning it!"
Their duel echoed across the battlefield.

Lucas moved with blinding speed.
He slashed through flames, carving arcs of lightning and shadow. Inferna retaliated with sweeping claws and gouts of lava, but his wings propelled him out of reach.
He activated Shadow Step, appearing behind her.
Storm Claw Barrage.
Multiple strikes raked across her back. Sparks and flames collided.
Inferna turned, swiping upward.
Lucas crossed his arms, blocking with armored forearms. The impact hurled him backward, skidding across the charred earth.
DING!
[Time Remaining: 1 Minute]
He had to end it.
He signaled Elira. She nodded.
Elira fired her last storm arrow, charging it with everything she had.
Lucas moved.
He circled Inferna, drawing her into position.
Flash Step.
He appeared above, slamming both fists into her head.
She reeled.
Elira released the arrow.
Time slowed.
The arrow struck true—right in the exposed core of her chest.
CRACK.
A surge of energy detonated inside Inferna.
She screamed, flames bursting outward in a final wave—then collapsed.
The fire died.
DING! [General Inferna Defeated] [Party Experience Gained]
Lucas dropped to one knee as the fusion ended.
Elira limped over. "That's one down."
Lucas looked across the battlefield.
Kaela still fought Kong.
And farther still, in the distance, the leader watched in silence.
The Silverback.
