I Built a Beast Empire After Reincarnation Chapter 43

Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Phase Three – The Emperor’s Gambit

The battlefield was chaos incarnate.

Smoke curled across the scorched earth like the tendrils of a slumbering beast. Cries of war rose and fell like the tide, echoing from the reinforced walls of Greystone. Arrows blazed through the sky, trailing streaks of red, and magical detonations left the landscape cratered and soaked in blood.

The enemy had come with fury. The generals of Stonewatch, though wounded, now pushed harder than ever. Despite Lucas’s brilliant trap work in Phase One and the ambush-heavy guerrilla tactics of Phase Two, the tide had not broken.

Yet.

Lucas stood atop the central watchtower, the flames of the ongoing battle flickering in his silver eyes. His crimson-lined cloak snapped behind him in the smoky wind. Beside him, the massive battle map flickered with rune-marked figures—each piece representing one of his forces or the generals of the enemy.

Below, Kaela fought tooth and nail against General Corven, her thunder-charged axes clashing against beastmasters and cutting deep into Stonewatch’s warbeast lines. Her snarling companion, Thunderfang, was a storm of fangs and claws, leaping between enemies with vicious precision.

To the east, Elira was a blur of wind and steel. She moved across the rooftops like a shadow’s whisper, loosing arrows with uncanny precision as she dueled Darion’s aerial knights in the skies. Her bond with Luna, her Wind Lynx, allowed seamless midair movement—evasive, fluid, and lethal.

The battlefield raged, but the rhythm of the enemy advance had begun to slow. Lucas could feel it. The moment of decisive action had arrived.

He turned to Malrick. The merchant’s cheerful demeanor was gone, replaced by the glint of a tactician’s resolve. His hands hovered over a glowing glyph-board, ready to unleash the next coordinated strike.

"Ready the shadow phantoms," Lucas said. "We’re beginning Phase Three."

Malrick gave a single nod. "As you command."

Lucas turned back to the field and whispered, "Let’s change the rules."

He vaulted from the tower, landing beside the forward barricades where Umbra and Zephyra awaited him. Umbra’s deep growl rumbled through the ground. Zephyra’s wings flared, kicking up a gust that blew dust and ash in all directions.

Lucas nodded to them both.

"Fusion."

The transformation was instantaneous.

Light burst from beneath Lucas’s boots, surging up into a cascade of shadows and stormlight. His body was engulfed in the full regalia of the Imperial Armor—black-gold plates lined with roaring lion insignias and gleaming emerald dragon inlays. The Twin Phantom Blades locked into his grip with a sound like lightning cracking against steel.

A hush fell over the battlefield.

Then the emperor moved.

Guerrilla squads hidden in the ruins surged out with prearranged signals. Mages launched disorienting fog bombs while melee squads disrupted Stonewatch’s flank. In the chaos, Malrick triggered the Shadow Phantoms—illusionary copies of Lucas, Kaela, and Elira that danced across the battlefield, drawing fire and spreading confusion.

Lucas, now enhanced with speed from Zephyra and strength from Umbra, blurred across the frontlines. His twin blades carved glowing arcs through enemy formations. One swipe decapitated a knight; another cleaved a spear in half and impaled the man behind it.

"Storm Step!" he shouted.

Lucas blinked forward mid-run, appearing behind a Stonewatch war officer and cutting him down before the man realized he was flanked. Zephyra’s wind surged with each of his dashes, and Umbra’s shadow roared with every step.

Overhead, Elira launched a volley that whistled like a banshee’s scream. Three arrows struck Darion’s eagle in one wing, causing him to lose balance midflight. Luna launched from the wall and latched onto an aerial knight, dragging them down into the dirt, where the militia finished the job.

On the ground, Kaela was an unstoppable force. She met Corven’s charge with savage laughter, swinging her twin axes with relentless precision. Gorefang attempted a gore charge, but Thunderfang intercepted with a crackling pounce, biting into the rhino’s shoulder.

Then came the roar that silenced both sides.

[System Alert: Lord Agram has entered the battlefield.]

He came like a walking storm.

Flanked by elite blood knights and riding atop Ironjaw, the Armored Hellhound, Agram exuded power. His armor pulsed with blood-forged runes, and his cleaver gleamed red, wet with a fresh ritual. With every step he took, the morale of his army surged.

Lucas froze, staring across the battlefield. Their eyes met.

"You’ve played well, boy," Agram’s voice boomed, amplified by magic. "But Greystone falls today. You’re no emperor. You’re just a child swinging relics."

Lucas didn’t flinch. "You want to find out what kind of emperor I am? Step forward."

The surviving generals gathered around Agram—Darion, wounded but flying. Corven, limping but laughing. Nera, phasing through shadows with blood dripping from her fangs.

"All of you," Agram roared, "crush them. Kill the Beast Emperor!"

The command echoed like thunder.

Lucas activated Predict, switching to defensive formation and sending an order through the system link.

"Kaela, Elira—regroup. We take them together. This is the final phase."

Kaela’s voice cut through the link. "Let’s break these bastards."

Elira’s reply came like wind through a blade. "Together."

Lucas braced himself, energy crackling along his armor.

Then, the generals charged.

Corven bellowed, swinging a club the size of a tree. Darion descended like a falcon from hell. Nera vanished from sight.

Agram, cleaver in hand, stomped forward with Ironjaw, each of their footsteps shaking the ground.

Lucas ran to meet them.

His blades clashed with Darion’s wind-charged spear, deflecting and twisting it aside. With a roar, he ducked under Corven’s swing and countered with Bladed Echo, sending five shadow strikes toward the Beastmaster.

Kaela arrived a second later, shoulder-checking Corven off balance while Thunderfang collided with Gorefang once again.

Nera appeared behind Lucas, only to be intercepted by Elira’s arrow, which struck her shoulder and forced her back.

Elira shouted, "You’re not touching him!"

Ironjaw pounced—but Umbra met the beast midair. The two monsters collided with a sound like mountains crashing, teeth and claws tearing at each other in a swirl of shadows and fire.

Lucas pressed forward.

Agram raised his cleaver high and roared, "I’ll gut you myself!"

Lucas met the strike with both blades crossed. The impact rattled his bones, but he held.

"This city is under my protection!" Lucas growled. "And I will not fall."

He unleashed Overdrive.

Power surged. Time slowed. Lucas struck again and again—slashes so fast they blurred, elemental trails spiraling behind him.

Blood sprayed.

Agram grunted, taking a step back. But he didn’t fall.

"I see it now," the Warhound said, wiping blood from his mouth. "You’re not a cub... You’re a beast."

Lucas raised his blades, chest heaving. "I told you. I’m the emperor."

...

Lucas retreated and stood in the center of the war-scarred courtyard, his armor cracked and scorched, his breath shallow. His Twin Phantom Blades were stained dark with blood and soot, and behind him, Umbra and Zephyra growled low—both battered, but still standing.

Kaela also retreated and limped to his side, armor dented and axes chipped. Blood streamed from a shallow cut on her brow. Thunderfang crouched beside her, panting heavily.

Elira landed gracefully atop Luna behind them, her bow shimmering with the last traces of wind magic. Her quiver was nearly empty, and she had a long, shallow gash along her thigh.

They were alive.

But only just.

And the enemy still surged.

"We’re losing ground," Elira said through gritted teeth. "They’re forcing our militia to retreat into the inner walls."

Lucas wiped the blood from his mouth and checked the status screen with a thought. The numbers were shifting too fast—soldiers falling, traps used, beasts injured.

And then—

A shadow passed overhead.

Lucas looked up.

Darion Bragg descended like a demon of wind and steel, riding Skyrend with talons bared and a spiral of wind magic dancing around his spear.

"Get down!" Lucas shouted.

Skyrend unleashed a piercing screech, launching a barrage of slicing wind blades that tore through the battlefield like a scythe. Dozens of Greystone soldiers were flung aside—one of the guard towers cracked at its base.

Darion landed heavily in the plaza, his eyes locked onto Lucas, his face twisted with rage and shame.

"No more games!" Darion growled. "You embarrassed me. Wounded me. But this time, I end you—Beast Emperor or not."

Lucas stepped forward, raising his blades.

"I don’t care about your pride, Darion. But I will protect my people."

Kaela tightened her grip on her axes. "You’ll have to go through all of us."

Darion sneered. "Gladly."

Skyrend circled above like a vulture, his shrieks disorienting even the elite troops on the walls. The wind thickened, pulsing with Darion’s aura.

"Split up!" Lucas shouted. "Draw him down!"

Elira and Kaela split left and right, with Luna leaping onto the rooftops and Thunderfang charging through the smoke and chaos. Lucas alone held the center as bait.

Darion lunged, spear thrusting with unnatural speed, enhanced by wind spells and aerial momentum.

Lucas barely parried, his gauntlets vibrating on impact.

"Umbra!" he called.

The massive lion roared and slammed into Skyrend as the eagle dove again, claws clashing against Umbra’s obsidian hide. They locked in midair before tumbling into a nearby outpost, reducing it to rubble.

Darion pressed the advantage, a wind-enhanced flurry of thrusts forcing Lucas back. He landed a glancing blow on Lucas’s side, cutting through the armor.

Blood splattered.

"You’re strong," Darion hissed. "But you’ve grown tired."

Lucas gritted his teeth. "Then it’s time I reminded you—"

He activated Predict, changing his formation mid-combat, and unleashed Storm Step, blinking behind Darion in an instant.

But Darion anticipated the move. He spun, slamming the butt of his spear into Lucas’s chest and launching him back across the plaza.

Lucas skidded along the stone, coughing blood.

Elira launched a volley from the rooftops. Her arrows howled through the wind, but Skyrend twisted mid-flight, dodging them with a screech.

Kaela roared, using Thunderfang as a springboard to leap into the air. Her axes glowed with electric fury as she brought them down toward Darion.

He raised his spear—Sky Guard spell active.

CLANG!

The force of the block sent Kaela spinning, crashing into a statue in the courtyard.

They were fast.

They were strong.

But not invincible.

Darion prepared his ultimate spell.

"Wind Domain: Spiraling Judgment!"

The air thickened. The sky darkened. A spiraling vortex formed above him, spinning violently. Blades of air coalesced into a cyclone.

Lucas forced himself to stand. "If that hits the wall..."

Elira, through the party link, whispered: "We won’t let it."

She launched one of her Phase Arrows, enchanted to slip through magical barriers. It struck Darion’s left shoulder—his concentration wavered.

Lucas raised his blades. "Now!"

Kaela appeared from the smoke, charging again.

Lucas activated Bladed Echo, surrounding Darion with five shadow copies.

They attacked in unison.

Darion’s wind cyclone collapsed as he blocked, dodged, parried—but one blade struck true.

CRACK.

The Twin Phantom Blades pierced his armor, slicing into his side.

Zephyra swooped in, unleashing a Storm Howl that grounded Skyrend with a thunderous burst.

Darion stumbled.

Kaela slammed her axes into his back.

Lucas spun behind him, driving both blades into Darion’s chest.

The wind died.

Darion gasped.

He fell to his knees.

[System Alert: General Darion Bragg Defeated.]

The battlefield trembled.

Stonewatch forces hesitated.

Lucas looked down at Darion, eyes narrowed. "You chose pride over peace. And now... it’s over."

Darion coughed blood but smiled faintly. "You... really are... something else."

He collapsed.

Silence.

Kaela panted, eyes wide. "That... was intense."

Elira landed beside them. "One down."

Lucas turned toward the battlefield.

Three generals remained.

And the Warhound of Stonewatch had just begun to move.
