They really had not expected it. What was supposed to be a prolonged project had suddenly ended. Had they not seen it with their own eyes, who would have believed it?
Lin Fan finished digging the pond, waved at them, and prepared to leave. When he walked away, he specifically crouched near the vegetable patch, looked closely at it, and nodded in satisfaction at the thriving growth. "Keep growing, keep trying hard."
All of these were the fruits of the survivors’ labor from the Sunshine District.
"Lin," Yan Nini approached.
Lin Fan smiled and asked, "Feeling better?"
Yan Nini nodded, "Thanks for caring, Lin. I am feeling much better. I just wanted to ask, can I do something to help?"
She truly wanted to do something.
Yet, she felt useless.
Now that it was the apocalypse, she knew that no safe place would harbor the useless. If she didn’t do anything, maybe people wouldn’t say anything for a while, but dissatisfaction would surely arise over time.
She knew the people here were kind and likely wouldn’t criticize her, but deep down, she couldn’t help but worry.
"You want to do something?"
"Yes, I really want to be of some use," said Yan Nini, who earnestly wished to contribute, despite possibly not excelling at many tasks.
Lin Fan pondered. Yan Nini was a major internet celebrity with countless fans and earned a lot. Money shouldn’t be an issue for her, yet suddenly, she wanted to be useful.
"You’re not short of money, are you?"
Yan Nini paused slightly, "No."
She knew that in the Sunshine District, transactions required money. Anything obtained from someone else needed to be paid for. Currently, she lacked everything but money.
Lin Fan suggested with a smile, "Then maybe you could join us in cleaning up the nearby shops."
Yan Nini understood what that meant—cleaning up deserted shops for others and getting paid in return.
"Okay, I can do that."
"Alright, I was just kidding. That job requires physical labor and pays little. Wang Kai and I don’t even get enough as it is. You’re not short of money, so why bother with that kind of work?" Lin Fan laughed and then suggested, "You must be bored, right? I have a better idea. Your talent is dancing. Why not set up a dance class? You could teach Feifei and Tingting how to dance. I think the girls would love that."
Learning can be exhausting and monotonous for children.
Giving them a hobby is a great way to adjust their mindset.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
If he told Feifei and Tingting right now, the two girls would surely jump for joy.
Tingting: "Uncle, Tingting loves dancing the most."
Feifei: "Are you trying to kill me?"
Yan Nini thought for a moment, "Okay, then I’ll teach them to dance. Lin, do you like watching dancing?"
Lin Fan considered, "I quite enjoy watching you dance."
The desert, the base.
Everyone’s expression was grim, showing no sign of joy. The research on the crystal had still not made any progress, and it was now one of the most critical issues across all major bases.
a voice came, and a woman stood before the group, "You are all the most skilled, authoritative experts of our country. The apocalypse has been going on for a while now, and I want to know, how many of our country’s citizens are still alive?"
After asking this, the woman adjusted her glasses.
Her name was Ji Qiuyue. She had been there before the outbreak, and after it began, she had wanted to call her family but was too afraid the ringing might endanger them. She could only send messages which, until now, remained unanswered.
The room fell silent.
It wasn’t that they didn’t want to answer, but rather that they were afraid to.
They had studied many zombie movies, the ideal zombies being those even an old grandmother pushing a wheelchair could outrun.
If it were those kinds of zombies, survivors might forge a bloody path using the tools at hand.
But the reality was zombies at the peak of human fitness, running as fast as top athletes, with horrifying levels of explosiveness and endurance.
And there were even evolved mutant zombies.
This completely sealed any hope for humanity’s survival.
Even hiding at home wasn’t safe.
How long could supplies last?
Searching for supplies outside was extremely dangerous; just being spotted by a zombie without a vehicle meant almost certain death.
Ji Qiuyue said, "Fortunately, there’s some good news. Until now, only humans have turned into zombies. Animals still exist, especially those in remote mountain areas who can survive thanks to geographical advantages. It’s one of the few pieces of good news so far."
The silence persisted.
Perhaps this was really one of the few positive aspects.
If even animals turned into zombies, especially rats, it would be a true nightmare. Any shelter with a hole could be breached, with no chance of survival.
Ji Qiuyue felt helpless.
All the major bases were stalling, clueless about how to proceed, feeling as if the disaster was targeted specifically at humankind.
Their purpose seemed to be the extinction of the human race.
Truly invisible; even a glimmer of hope would uplift spirits and inspire a hopeful outlook for the future.
