Caring for the elderly gentleman.
Dawu was cooking eggs while Xiaowu watched.
"Brother, what’s the deal with that survivor we just saw?"
"Don’t know, it’s none of our business, we just need to take good care of Grandpa."
Xiaowu nodded in agreement, "Brother, when will this apocalypse end? It’s too tough to bear."
He didn’t know when the apocalypse would end either.
Soft knocks sounded at the door.
Hearing the knocking, they exchanged glances and approached the door, peering through the peephole to see that it was the sword-carrying survivor they had just seen.
"Is anybody there?" Lin Fan asked softly.
He knew there were people inside, but they seemed very vigilant, remaining quiet. However, even without any noise, he could still hear faint breathing and the sound of boiling water from the kitchen.
Dawu and Xiaowu stayed silent.
It was the end times, and they didn’t open the door for strangers.
Lin Fan stood outside the security door.
Maybe they were indeed too cautious.
"Hello, my name is Lin Fan, I’m a security guard from Sunshine District, patrolling the streets. I saw you climbing over the wall to get in here and wanted to ask if you needed any help?" Lin Fan spoke up.
Dawu and Xiaowu looked at each other.
Their words struck them as odd. Raised on the streets from a young age, they knew all too well the treacheries of human nature. If someone thought they could deceive them with a few casual words, that was absolutely impossible.
They kept watching through the peephole, mindful of the situation outside.
Dawu made eye gestures to his brother.
Xiaowu tiptoed into the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife, and thought, if the other party doesn’t cause trouble, they’ll live in peace, but if they dared to start something, the brothers wouldn’t mind using the knife on them.
At the moment, although separated by the security door, Lin Fan seemed to sense all of their actions and behaviors.
He could feel that they were holding a knife.
Lin Fan understood that his appearance and words had made them defensive—thinking about it, it was this damned apocalypse that caused it all. If it weren’t for these end times, people wouldn’t react to a stranger knocking at their door with a knife in hand. Though they would still be cautious, they would’ve asked through the door what the matter was, then declined any help with possibly a ’thank you.’
"If you need anything, feel free to find me at Sunshine District," Lin Fan said, then turned and left.
Listening to the footsteps descending the stairs outside, growing fainter and fainter.
The brothers breathed a sigh of relief. Survivors in the apocalypse were all damn crazy. They had seen with their own eyes individuals who were even more ruthless and vicious than themselves—thieves. They appeared harmless but were at the peak of terror.
A cough came from inside the room.
The brothers hurried back in, "Grandpa, what’s wrong?"
The old man kindly said, "Put on more blankets, it’s a bit cold."
The brothers exchanged a glance, feeling a sense of unease.
A steel beast moved along the streets.
This was part of Han Shuang and her group’s daily routine, driving around the city and scanning their surroundings.
If after the apocalypse the zombies hadn’t changed at all, she wouldn’t have been worried at all. She knew Lin Fan was constantly eliminating zombies, and given the rate at which he was doing it, one day they could all be wiped out completely.
But later on, she witnessed various evolved zombies.
This was a very dangerous sign.
"Boss lady, did you notice, when we left, the streets near our district had very few zombies, or even none at all? Lin Brother cleaned them out too thoroughly," Xu Zeyang marveled.
He had never admired anyone, but honestly, he admired Lin Fan.
Wen Jie said, "Yeah, I wonder how long it would take for Lin Brother to clean up the entire Huangshi."
Han Shuang pictured that figure, that face in her mind, "If we persist, there will definitely come a day when we can clear out all the zombies from Huangshi."
The driver, Lao Mao, said, "Have you heard of the Steel Fortress city?"
Xu Zeyang asked, "Is that the kind of city surrounded by steel walls?"
Lao Mao said, "Yes, that kind. A city surrounded by steel walls, creating a secure zone and building a steel fortress city. Keeping the zombies out provides the survivors with space to live. Slowly push outwards, eventually clearing out all the zombies. To rebuild civilization, we must tackle the zombies all around the world."
Wen Jie was stunned, "Around the world?"
"Absolutely, our country is bordered by many others, and if we only clear out our own territory, the danger remains. Plus, these bizarre evolved zombies are unimaginably terrifying. Any breach could reignite disaster, and all efforts would be in vain. Zombies can wander across lakes and seas, drifting from far-off seas. If we don’t clear out all zombies, it’s unrealistic to think we could build a massive defense wall along the coast," Lao Mao shared his thoughts.
Xu Zeyang shivered at the thought, "That’s terrifying, the whole world... there must be so many zombies, we might be fighting them forever."
Han Shuang, listening to their discussion, turned to gaze at the streets outside. Even though she had seen them many times, she couldn’t explain why, but each time she did, a desolate feeling welled up in her heart.
