The little Taoist was dubious: “Then can I really leave?”
Mu Mingtang nodded with a smile. Since Mu Mingtang had already said so, the little Taoist stopped persuading her and went into the side hall to keep warm. The little Taoist went upstairs towards the attic, wiped the lamp and lit it up.
After the lamp lit up, the view made it clear that the decorations such as paintings and calligraphy were very expensive and newly bought, just as Mu Mingtang mentioned.
The little Taoist touched the incense burner and found that it was made of real gold. Looking at the luxurious attic, he sighed: “I thought it was gold-plated, but it turned out to be pure gold. These calligraphies and paintings are also the handiwork of the famous masters. They are just hanging in an attic like this. What about their palace, then? Aren’t they super rich?”
The little Taoist looked around for a while before finding a chair that was comfortable to sit on. He glanced at the pastries on the table and simply took one and carelessly ate them one after another.
The little Taoist enjoyed it for a while out of spite of not being able to get these pastries in his usual life, and after eating more than half, he finally remembered that he was still a physician. He suddenly thought of Mu Mingtang, who was still standing downstairs. After all, she was a woman. Was it really okay to let her stay alone in the dark outdoors?
Zhenqingtang was an attic hall built in the centre of the lake. It was naturally peaceful and elegant to hold banquets for different occasions and enjoy the scenery during the day, but it was a bit scary to be in such a place late at night. Looking around, one could only find the bottomless black water, accompanied by the sound of wind that could be heard from the woods on the bank from time to time. The little Taoist was used to walking on mountain roads, so he didn’t feel much discomfort.
He walked to the window with a pastry in one hand to call Mu Mingtang to come inside, but once he opened the window to look downstairs, he found out that Mu Mingtang was still standing there in the same place he had left her.
Mu Mingtang stood under the window, facing the hall that Xie Xuanchen was in. The transparent and cold white moonlight shone on her as if a layer of frost had fallen on her shoulders.
The little Taoist suddenly had no words to express his thoughts. He also remembered that Xie Xuanchen had locked himself in a similar manner with the same determined face.
Mu Mingtang didn’t move, and there was also no movement in the hall, but both of them somehow knew that the other party was just across the window. The little Taoist watched for a while, then silently closed the window.
In fact, the little Taoist only ate half of his meal. He estimated that the time was almost up, so he tucked two pastries up his sleeve and gently walked downstairs.
The incense stick that kept track of the time was placed downstairs and was about to burn out.
Mu Mingtang had always kept her eye on the burning incense stick, and when she saw that it was almost time, she ran to the door at the fastest speed she had ever run and took out the key to unlock the door. Just now Mu Mingtang wanted to stay inside the hall, but Xie Xuanchen firmly disagreed and asked her to lock the door from outside. If Mu Mingtang had refused his suggestion, then he would have locked himself in some other hall instead, and if something were to go wrong, no one could go in and check on him.
