Another woman didn’t think much before she blurted out, “Prince An really dotes on the Princess. After all, the Princess’s waste of money and dresses had to have been an act that was spoiled and permitted by His Highness, is it not?”
After saying so, no one else continued talking about it. In fact, even the women who spoke didn’t think it was a big deal in the slightest. However, Xie Xuanchen heard the comments as he was approaching.
Xie Xuanchen narrowed his eyes slightly, knowing that luxury and profligate spending was not a good word in any public occasion. If someone hadn’t mentioned it just now, these women would not have mentioned it for no apparent reason.
And judging by the appearance of the person who spoke, it seemed that she had said it without much thought.
Xie Xuanchen’s expression changed as his eyes became cold and sharp. He slowly made his way through the front women and suddenly asked, “Who said she was wasting money and dresses just now?”
When Xie Xuanchen’s gaze changed, many of the women noticed that something was wrong.
It was an indescribable feeling and obviously, there were no external manifestations besides the harsher glint in his eyes, but everyone could feel that Xie Xuanchen’s mood had changed.
That was his invisible aura at work, along with everyone else’s natural instinct when coming across danger.
Xie Xuanchen’s cold eyes swept over the Empress and the others. Before he could speak again, the ones at the back of the line were afraid to even make a sound. When he accurately asked the definitions of ‘waste of money’, his surroundings became even more silent.
The women all looked at each other, but no one dared to answer. They also didn’t know how Xie Xuanchen managed to pick up the topic of their conversation in the hall through a mere comment when he wasn’t even there. However, since he had already made the query, it wasn’t something that the women could laugh off without answering.
These words were said by the Empress Dowager. Nevertheless, they could never expose the fact that it was her and nor could they blatantly lie in front of Xie Xuanchen, so they only bowed their heads and kept silent.
The Empress Dowager was a little embarrassed. In front of so many people, she couldn’t refuse to own up to her words, but if Xie Xuanchen asked such a tone and she responded, wouldn’t she appear weak?
There was no doubt that she was in a dilemma, but she finally evoked the temperament of an elder and said, “It was me. I heard that Princess An spent a lot of money and even used fresh fruits for incense, which was a wasteful act. Prince An’s Mansion is indeed not short of money, but it shouldn’t be squandered like this.”
Xie Xuanchen laughed angrily when he heard these words. He glanced at Empress Dowager Lu and then at the crowd behind him, asking, “So the lot of you talk to her like this the moment I’m not with her?”
Seeing that the situation was heading in the wrong direction, the Empress tried to smooth things over, “Prince An, the Empress Dowager was just giving her a gentle reminder; Princess An didn’t mind at all.”
