Yanghong’s presence before them now was probably a test from the court. Zhu Yanghong was once a military officer and had worked with Xie Xuanchen. Plus, Madam Zhu was heard to have a good relationship with Princess An, so he was probably the best candidate for him to be the mediator.
After Xie Xuanchen heard about the situation, he didn’t speak.
Nevertheless, Mu Mingtang knew that although he seemed calm and seemed to ignore the test by the court represented by Zhu Yanghong, his heart was no longer at peace. There weren’t any visible mood swings while they were eating, but when the couple went to bed that night, he had lost control.
Mu Mingtang was very tired. Xie Xuanchen had been vigorous on the bed, but today he was a bit too strong. Mu Mingtang remembered that the only time she became as tired as she currently felt was back when it was her first time. As soon as Xie Xuanchen finished, she fell into a deep slumber.
After she fell asleep, she unconsciously woke up at an odd hour once again. Come to think of it, Xie Xuanchen didn’t sleep after finishing his activities with her. Instead, he went out once again.
Mu Mingtang sat on the bed for a while before she stood up resignedly and got out of bed to find Xie Xuanchen.
She didn’t wake up the servants this time and headed straight to the martial arts field alone with a lamp. The area of the Prince’s courtyard’s west road was very large. It was equipped with a special horse farm, a martial arts arena, an armoury, and a town hall in the main courtyard. There, military books, maps, and Xie Xuanchen’s armour and sword were stored carefully.
The Yulin Palace was actually made to be Xie Xuanchen’s bedroom as the Zhenqin Palace was the place for his external activities.
When Mu Mingtang approached, the Zhenqin Palace was quiet and it was dark inside, as if there was no one there. But Mu Mingtang pushed open the door of the palace without any hesitation.
The moonlight lit up the place as the ground was illuminated with clarity. Mu Mingtang paused and asked softly, “Are you there?”
There was a long silence. But after a while, a soft sigh came from the innermost part of the palace, “Why are you here?”
Mu Mingtang knew that he would be here. Relieved, she turned and closed the door. From there, there was no light in the room as the moonlight was blocked out after the door was closed, reverting back to its state of darkness, save a small piece of light from the lamp in Mu Mingtang’s hand. She remained where she was and got used to the dark for a while. After she could see things vaguely, she held the lamp and walked in cautiously.
“I can’t sleep, so I came to you.”
The room was drowning with weapons, swords, and maps hanging all around, as if giant beasts were lurking around her and there was a kind of silent sombreness laced in the darkness. The lamp in Mu Mingtang’s hand wobbled. In this abyss of oppression, only the light in her hand was glowing.
It looked like a lighthouse one would see when they were on the way home.
It was silent for a long time before she suddenly heard Xie Xuanchen laugh lightly, seemingly pointing out, “It seems that you are not tired enough. I was afraid that you would not be able to bear it, so I deliberately showed you mercy. However, it looks like you are capable of handling more next time.”
