I'm the Villain, But the Heroines Keep Choosing Me Chapter 113

Day three arrived with tension crackling through the city.

This was the last day of the predicted attack window. If the intelligence was accurate, something would happen today. If not, they’d wasted three days on phantom threats.

Damien spent the day doing his normal patrol routine, but his mind was on the upcoming midnight rendezvous.

The mysterious shipment felt important in ways he couldn’t fully articulate.

Evening came. Elara departed for the cathedral, divine magic ready for whatever might emerge. Damien and Seria dressed in dark, practical clothing – nothing that would identify them as imperial agents, everything designed for stealth and combat mobility.

They reached the eastern docks an hour before midnight, finding concealed positions that offered clear views of the meeting point.

The docks at night were simultaneously busy and quiet. Ships loaded and unloaded cargo with mechanical efficiency, but the workers moved with tired routine rather than conversation. Perfect cover for illegal transactions.

Midnight approached.

A ship appeared – small merchant vessel, flying no identifying flags. It docked with practiced ease, and crew began unloading crates. Not unusual in itself, except these crates were being handled with extreme care. Wrapped in cloth, carried by multiple people, moved with caution that suggested either fragility or danger.

The buyers appeared fifteen minutes later. Three figures in hooded cloaks, faces concealed, moving with coordinated precision that suggested military training.

Damien’s shadow sense pulsed. The buyers themselves had no demonic presence, but something about those crates felt off. The darkness around them was distorted, similar to the warehouse but more intense.

Gold changed hands. The transaction completed quickly, professionally. The cloaked buyers loaded the crates onto a wagon and prepared to depart.

"We follow them," Damien whispered to Seria.

"Agreed. But carefully – they look trained."

They shadowed the wagon through the city, maintaining distance while keeping visual contact. The route wound through increasingly empty streets, heading toward the old district where buildings stood abandoned and city guard patrols were sparse.

The wagon stopped at a warehouse – different from the one Damien had investigated, but similar character.

Condemned, forgotten, perfect for illegal activities.

The buyers unloaded the crates, carrying them inside with that same excessive care.

Damien and Seria found positions where they could observe without being detected. Waited.

What emerged fifteen minutes later made Seria’s blood run cold.

Demons. Not the buyers – those remained human as far as he could tell – but the crates had contained demons. Small ones, barely three feet tall, but definitely demonic. And they were being led into the warehouse in organized groups, responding to human commands.

"They’re importing demons," Seria breathed, horror evident even in her whisper. "Smuggling them into the capital in crates disguised as normal cargo."

"Not just importing," Damien said, watching the patterns of movement. "Training them. Look at how they respond to those handlers. Those demons are following orders with military precision."

They watched for another twenty minutes as more demons emerged from crates, were sorted into groups, and led deeper into the warehouse under human supervision.

This was it. This was the infiltration method. Not teleportation or magical gates that would trigger wards – just old-fashioned smuggling through normal shipping channels. Demons hidden in cargo, moved past security through bribery and misdirection, stockpiled in abandoned buildings across the city.

How many warehouses? How many demons?

"We need to report this," Seria said. "Get imperial forces mobilized – "

"Wait." Damien grabbed her arm. "Look."

One of the handlers had removed their hood. The face underneath was familiar – Damien had seen it in briefing materials.

Lord Castellan Veyrix. Member of the Emperor’s advisory council. High-ranking noble with access to imperial intelligence and military planning.

A traitor. Confirmed, visible, actively coordinating demon smuggling into the capital.

"Gods," Seria whispered. "He’s on the Emperor’s council. He knows everything we’re doing."

"Which explains how the demons always seem one step ahead of official investigations," Damien said grimly. "They have someone feeding them our plans from the highest levels."

They watched Veyrix direct the demons, speaking with the other handlers in tones too low to hear at this distance. The operation was professional, organized, clearly something that had been running for extended time.

"We need proof," Damien said. "Visual confirmation isn’t enough to accuse a council member. We need documentation, witnesses, physical evidence he can’t deny."

"Or we could just kill him and his demon collaborators right now," Seria suggested, her hand on her sword hilt.

"Tempting. But if we attack, we alert the conspiracy that we’ve found them. They’ll scatter, hide evidence, eliminate witnesses. We’ll get Veyrix but lose the larger network." Damien’s mind was racing through possibilities. "We need to follow this thread all the way to its source. Find out who else is involved, how deep the corruption goes, what their actual objective is beyond just smuggling demons into the city."

"That’s a significant risk. Every day we wait, more demons get imported."

"I know. But – "

A pulse through his communication stone interrupted him. Elara’s voice, urgent and frightened.

"Damien. Seria. Cathedral under attack. Multiple demons, coordinated assault. I need backup immediately."

They looked at each other, the decision instant and mutual.

"Go," Damien said. "I’ll stay here, gather what evidence I can. You reinforce Elara."

"Not splitting up – "

"She needs help now. I can handle surveillance. Go!"

Seria hesitated one more second, then sprinted toward the cathedral, her battle magic already crackling around her hands.

Damien turned back to the warehouse, his shadow sense fully extended, watching Veyrix coordinate his demon smuggling operation while somewhere across the city, another attack unfolded.

This was the conspiracy’s real strategy – multiple simultaneous operations, forcing defenders to split their attention, ensuring no single location had adequate response capability.

Brilliant. Ruthless. And working exactly as planned.

Damien needed more information. Needed to understand the full scope before he could stop it.

He settled deeper into the shadows, becoming invisible, and prepared to watch for as long as necessary.

The game had just gotten significantly more dangerous.
