I'm the Villain, But the Heroines Keep Choosing Me Chapter 145

Damien considered how to articulate something he barely understood himself. "I’m drawn to her. I value her understanding in ways I can’t get from you or Seria because she’s living the same burden I am. But whether that’s love or just recognition of similarity – I honestly can’t tell."

"That’s fair. I can’t tell either, and I’m better at reading emotions than you are." Elara was quiet for a moment. "Would it bother you if I said I don’t hate the idea of her being part of this? Of us?"

"What?"

"I’ve been thinking about what she said. About not trying to replace us, just wanting to help keep you alive. About accepting that you come with us attached." Elara’s voice was thoughtful. "And I realized – I’m less threatened by that than I should be. Maybe because she loves you in ways that include accepting your existing commitments rather than demanding you abandon them. That’s different than typical romantic rivalry."

"You’re saying you’d be okay with me having feelings for her?"

"I’m saying I’m trying to be okay with it. Because the alternative – fighting her, forcing you to choose, creating conflict that divides rather than strengthens – that seems destructive." She shifted to look at him directly. "You need someone who understands shadow magic from the inside. Seria and I can’t be that person. If Lyristae fills that role while respecting what we have with you – maybe that’s actually healthy rather than threatening."

"That’s remarkably mature."

"Don’t sound so surprised. I’m capable of growth."

‐--

She smiled. "Though I reserve the right to be jealous and occasionally petty about sharing you with a literal queen."

"Fair."

They talked for another hour, not about heavy topics, just comfortable conversation between people who knew each other deeply. When they finally left the cathedral, Damien felt more grounded than he had in days.

---

Evening brought all three of them together in their shared quarters. They’d made a deliberate choice not to attend the various strategy meetings and final preparations happening throughout the city. Tonight was for them, not for the war.

Seria had somehow procured decent wine – a challenge given the siege preparations – and they shared it while reviewing mundane topics. Elara’s frustration with Valdaran Church bureaucracy. Seria’s observations about local guard competence compared to their home kingdom. Damien’s growing appreciation for Valdara’s architectural aesthetics.

Normal conversation. Human connection. The kind of interaction that reminded all of them why fighting was necessary.

"Can I ask something potentially uncomfortable?" Seria said as they finished the wine.

"You’re going to regardless of whether we give permission," Elara observed.

"True. But I’m trying to be polite about it." Seria set down her glass. "Tomorrow, when the assault starts, when you’re pushing toward the corruption goal – what’s the actual plan? How do you increase corruption that quickly without losing control entirely? Just fighting?"

"Yes, combat. Extensive use of shadow magic in genuine crisis situations forces the corruption higher while simultaneously teaching me to function at elevated levels." Damien had discussed this with Lyristae in detail. "The demons provide perfect conditions – high stakes, genuine threat, necessity of using maximum power continuously."

"So you’ll be killing. A lot. Potentially thousands." Seria’s voice was neutral, professional.

"Yes."

"And each kill pushes the corruption higher while also increasing your shadow comprehension, making you more effective, creating a feedback loop of growing power and growing darkness."

"That’s the theory."

"That’s disturbing when you phrase it that way," Elara said quietly. "You’re going to become stronger by embracing the very thing we’ve been fighting against. By letting the shadows take hold rather than resisting it."

"Only to a point. Fifty percent, then it stabilizes through the Second Core activation. I’m not pursuing unlimited corruption – just the specific threshold needed to unlock additional capabilities."

"Fifty, huh? and you trust that you’ll stop at fifty? That the power won’t feel so good you keep pushing higher?" Seria’s question was pointed.

"Yes. And I trust you two to pull me back if I start chasing power beyond that threshold." He met both their gazes. "That’s what anchors do, right? Keep me human."

"That’s what we’re supposed to do," Elara agreed. "The question is whether we can actually do it at fifty percent. Whether we reach you through that much darkness."

"Lyristae manages eighty-four percent. If she can maintain humanity at that level, I can manage fifty."

"Lyristae’s had years to build up gradually. You’re jumping to fifty in one day. That’s not the same thing." But Seria’s voice carried acceptance rather than argument. "Though I suppose we won’t know if it’s manageable until we try."

They fell into silence, each contemplating what tomorrow would bring.

"I don’t want to think about war tonight," Elara said suddenly. "Don’t want to discuss corruption or death or impossible choices. Tonight, I just want to be with you both."

"Agreed," Seria said. "We’ve spent weeks in crisis mode. Tonight should be about us, not about tactics or survival."

"What did you have in mind?" Damien asked.

Elara’s smile was soft, intimate. "I think you know exactly what I have in mind."

She stood, extending her hand to him. Seria mirrored the gesture from his other side.

"We want tonight," Seria said simply. "Want to remind you. Want to ground you."

"Want to love you," Elara added, "in ways that have nothing to do with strategy or necessity or anchor bond mechanics. Just because we want to. Because you’re ours and we’re yours and tomorrow might change everything."

Damien took both offered hands, letting them pull him toward the bedroom.

"I love you both," he said. "Whatever I become tomorrow, whatever the corruption does to me – That stays true."

"We know," they said together.

The bedroom door closed behind them, shutting out the world and its demands.

Tonight was theirs.

Tomorrow could bring war and transformation and impossible choices.

But tonight – it was love, connection, and humanity expressed through the oldest form of intimacy.

It was proof that even carrying corruption and facing death, they were still fundamentally human.

Still capable of choosing each other.

Still worth fighting to preserve.
