I'm the Villain, But the Heroines Keep Choosing Me Chapter 155

"It’s fine. I find honesty more valuable than composure." Damien meant it. "And Lyristae? I might not know if I love you as much as you love me. But I want to."

"Really?" Something like longing flickered across her expression.

Damien smiled.

"Really. You deserve more than being loved from the shadows. And I deserve to understand what I actually feel for you without the complication of imminent death."

"That’s... I’d like that." Her smile was genuine, warm, carrying none of the careful queen’s mask. "Though fair warning – I’m terrible at normal courtship. I’ve spent so long being strategic about relationships that I’m not sure I remember how to just... date someone."

"I orchestrated almost all events to get Elara. I don’t think either of us gets to judge the other for unconventional relationship building."

She laughed – genuine, unguarded. "Fair point. Though at least your manipulation was limited to one iteration. I’ve been planning this across eighteen."

"That’s dedication."

"Or obsession bordering on insanity." But she was still smiling. "Lucky for you, I’ve made peace with being the obsessive one who refuses to accept inevitable outcomes."

They returned to watching the city, standing closer now, shoulders touching, hands occasionally brushing.

"What happens now?" Damien asked. "The battle’s won, but the war isn’t over. The demon conspiracy, the empire-wide threat, whatever confrontation you won’t tell me about – all of that is still coming."

"Now you rest. Let the Second Core stabilize fully. Train with your new capabilities. Prepare for what’s next without burning yourself out immediately after transformation." Lyristae’s voice was practical. "You’ve bought us time. We use that time wisely."

"And us? This thing we’re exploring?"

"We take it naturally. Let you figure out what you actually feel without pressure. Let me learn how to love you openly instead of from calculated distance." She glanced at him. "Your anchors will be watching closely. Making sure I’m not manipulating you, not pushing you toward choices that serve my interests over yours. That’s healthy. Good for you even if it’s uncomfortable for me."

"They’re protective."

"They should be. You’re worth protecting." Lyristae’s tone was matter-of-fact. "And honestly, having them watch means I can’t fall back on manipulation as easily. Forces me to be genuine even when strategy would be more comfortable."

"You’re really committed to this honesty thing."

"I’m committed to you surviving. And I’ve learned seventeen times that manipulation without genuine foundation always fails eventually. So yes, honesty. Even when it’s harder."

The celebration sounds were fading as the night deepened. People drifting toward homes and beds, exhaustion finally overcoming adrenaline.

"I should go," Damien said. "Seria and Elara will be wondering where I disappeared to."

"Tell them you were with me and we talked about feelings and the iterations and the fact that I’m hopelessly in love with you." Lyristae’s voice was firm. "No secrets. That’s how this works if it’s going to work at all."

"Agreed." He squeezed her hand once more before releasing it. "Thank you for tonight."

"Thank you for surviving. For being strong enough this time. For giving me hope that maybe, finally, this iteration will be different."

Damien moved to leave, then paused at the door.

"Lyristae?"

"Yes?"

"I’m glad you didn’t give up. Glad you kept fighting even when it seemed hopeless. Whatever I might be feeling for you – gratitude is definitely part of it."

"Gratitude is a good start," she said softly. "The rest we can figure out together."

He left her standing on the balcony, the queen who’d fought to save him, and made his way back to his shared quarters.

Where Seria and Elara were waiting, both awake despite the late hour, both clearly aware he’d been gone.

"Where were you?" Seria asked. Not accusatory, just concerned.

"With Lyristae." Damien sat between them. "She told me truths that I’m not sure I can fully process yet."

Damien sat them down, and began explaining in as much detail as he could what Lyristae had explained to him about the iterations, mixing his own knowledge in to make it easier for them to comprehend.

At the end, they were almost speechless and in utter disbelief.

"That’s..." Elara processed that. "That’s a lot."

"It explains her obsession with your survival," Seria observed. "Hard to let someone go after watching them die that many times."

"She also told me she loves me. Again. More explicitly this time, with context about how she’s loved me across multiple iterations while I’ve fallen for other people." He looked at both of them. "I told her I don’t know if I love her back, but I want to explore what this could be."

They were quiet for a moment.

"How do you feel about that?" Elara asked carefully. "About potentially developing feelings for her?"

"Uncertain. Interested." Damien was honest. "Aware that she deserves more than one sided longing. And I deserve to understand what I feel without the pressure of crisis forcing quick decisions."

"We’re okay with you exploring that," Seria said.

Elara nodded. "As long as she’s not our replacement."

"There’s no replacing both of you."

"Good." Elara curled against his side. "Because losing you to corruption was terrifying enough. Losing you to another woman would be worse."

"You’re not losing me to anyone. Don’t worry. Just figuring out if there’s room in my life for someone else who matters."

"There is," Seria said. "We’ve already accepted that. Just needed to hear you confirm it directly instead of dancing around implications."

They settled into comfortable silence, the three of them tangled together on the sofa.

Outside, the last sounds of celebration faded into night.

Damien sat between his two anchors, thinking about a queen who’d loved him through eighteen lifes, and wondering what it meant that he was finally strong enough to maybe survive what was coming.

Whatever happened next, at least he wouldn’t face it alone.

He had Seria and Elara.

He had Lyristae preparing him for challenges he couldn’t yet see.

He had power enough to make a difference instead of just surviving through luck.

For the first time since transmigrating into this world, Damien felt like he might actually have a chance.

Not just at survival.

At something more.
