I'm the Villain, But the Heroines Keep Choosing Me Chapter 38

Elara made it back to her quarters thirty minutes before Sister Catherine’s morning inspection.

She moved through the silent Church corridors carefully, every step a reminder of what she’d done. Her body ached in ways she’d never experienced – a pleasant soreness that made heat bloom in her cheeks whenever she thought about its cause.

Her quarters were exactly as she’d left them, bed still perfectly made to suggest she’d slept there. She stripped quickly, hiding the dark blue dress at the bottom of her wardrobe, and scrubbed herself with cold water from the basin.

The evidence was harder to remove than she’d anticipated. Bruises on her hips where Damien’s fingers had gripped. A mark on her neck she hadn’t noticed him leaving. The slight tremor in her legs that wouldn’t fully settle.

And something deeper – a fundamental change she could feel but not see. Like her divine magic had shifted frequency slightly, no longer purely holy but touched with something darker.

She was pulling on her ceremonial robes when Sister Catherine’s sharp knock sounded.

"Saintess? Morning prayers begin in twenty minutes."

"I’m awake, Sister Catherine." Elara was proud of how steady her voice sounded. "I’ll be ready."

"Good. High Priest Aldous wishes to speak with you after prayers. Something about your recent... associations."

Of course he did. Elara suppressed a sigh. "I’ll attend him after prayers."

Sister Catherine’s footsteps retreated, and Elara finished dressing with shaking hands. Every movement reminded her of Damien – his touch, his voice, the way he’d made her feel things she hadn’t known existed.

I love you.

She’d said it. Meant it. And he’d said it back.

The Saintess who’d woken yesterday would have been horrified at what she’d done. The Elara who’d experienced true connection, genuine choice, and overwhelming pleasure couldn’t bring herself to regret a single moment.

Even knowing the complications coming.

She made it through morning prayers on autopilot, her usual serene Saintess mask firmly in place. But when she raised her hands to channel divine magic for the blessing, something felt different.

The golden light that emerged was... tainted wasn’t the right word. Changed. Still holy, still powerful, but with darker threads woven through it. Like shadow corrupting sunlight, or night bleeding into day.

No one seemed to notice except Mother Superior, whose sharp eyes tracked the subtle difference with growing suspicion.

After prayers, Elara was escorted to High Priest Aldous’s office. The same intimidating space where he’d interrogated Damien, now turned on her.

"Saintess Elara." Aldous’s voice was carefully neutral. "Please, sit."

She sat with perfect composure, hands folded in her lap, every inch the obedient holy woman.

"I wanted to discuss your recent behavior," Aldous began. "There have been... concerns. About your associations. Your attitude toward Church authority. Small signs of rebellion that suggest concerning influences."

"I’m not aware of any rebellion, High Priest." Elara kept her voice mild. "I’ve attended all required duties, maintained my schedule, performed my obligations."

"Technically, yes. But there’s a difference between obedience and willing service." He leaned forward. "You’ve been distant. Distracted. Mother Superior reports that your divine magic feels different during prayers."

Elara’s heart skipped, but her expression didn’t change. "Different how?"

"She couldn’t specify. Just... wrong, somehow. Tainted." Aldous studied her face. "Tell me, Saintess – have you been exposed to any corrupting influences lately?"

Only the man I love, who uses demonic powers and is literally corrupting me through our bond. Does that count?

"I can’t imagine what you’re referring to," she said aloud.

"Lord Damien Valcrest. You’ve been in contact with him despite our explicit prohibition."

"I’ve seen him at public ceremonies. Nothing more."

"Nothing more?" Aldous’s tone suggested disbelief. "You visited his estate personally. Spent hours alone with him in his quarters."

"He was unwell. I was concerned. I visited as I would any member of the kingdom who needed spiritual comfort."

"Spiritual comfort. In his bedroom. For three hours."

"He needed someone who saw him as human rather than threat." Elara met the High Priest’s eyes directly. "I provided that. Nothing inappropriate occurred."

The lie came easily now. She’d spent twenty years being truthful and obedient. One night with Damien had taught her that sometimes truth served those in power, not those seeking freedom.

Aldous was quiet for a long moment. "I want to believe you, Saintess. But the evidence suggests otherwise. The changes in your behavior, the alteration in your magic, your continued defense of a man using dark powers – all of it points to corruption."

"Or it points to me developing my own opinions instead of simply accepting Church doctrine without question." Elara’s voice carried an edge she’d never used with authority before. "Perhaps what you’re calling corruption is just independence."

"Independence from the Goddess’s will – "

"Independence from your will," Elara interrupted, surprising herself with her boldness. "The Goddess has never spoken to me directly, High Priest. Only you and Mother Superior and the other clergy, claiming to interpret Her desires. Maybe I’m finally questioning whether your interpretations serve Her... or serve you."

Aldous’s expression darkened. "That kind of thinking is exactly what concerns me. Lord Valcrest has poisoned your mind – "

"Lord Valcrest has treated me like a person capable of forming my own thoughts. That’s not poison. It’s just..respect." Elara stood. "If that’s all, High Priest, I have duties to attend."

"Sit down." Command, not request. "We’re not finished."

Elara hesitated, then sat. Not out of fear, but out of pragmatic recognition that pushing too hard too fast would create problems she wasn’t ready to handle.

"I’m ordering a full examination," Aldous said coldly. "Medical and magical. To determine if you’ve been compromised."

Panic flared. A medical examination would reveal everything – the loss of her "Purity", the bruises, the physical evidence of what she’d done.

"That’s unnecessary – "

"It’s standard procedure when corruption is suspected. Unless you have reason to refuse?"

She had every reason to refuse. But refusing would confirm suspicion.

"Fine," she said, keeping her voice steady. "When?"

"This afternoon. Mother Superior will oversee it personally." Aldous’s expression was satisfied. "If nothing inappropriate has occurred, you have nothing to fear."
