I'm the Villain, But the Heroines Keep Choosing Me Chapter 52

The Great Forum was built three centuries ago for exactly this purpose – public discourse, civic debate, the marketplace of ideas given physical form.

Stone amphitheater seating arranged in concentric circles, capacity for two thousand. Raised platform at the center for speakers. Acoustics designed so even whispers from the platform carried to the highest seats. Open to the sky, visible to the city, impossible to hide or control.

Perfect for what Elara was attempting.

By noon on the day of the forum, every seat was filled and thousands more gathered in the surrounding plaza, unable to enter but unwilling to miss this moment. Clergy in their robes occupied entire sections. Minor nobility claimed their traditional areas.

Common folk filled the rest – merchants, craftsmen, farmers who’d traveled from outlying villages specifically for this.

The entire kingdom watching while the Church tore itself apart.

Damien stood backstage with Elara, both of them reviewing final preparations. She wore simple white robes again – the humble servant aesthetic that had worked so well at the Council chambers. He wore dark formal attire that made him look dangerous and competent in equal measure.

"Nervous?" he asked.

"Terrified." Elara’s hands were shaking slightly. "I have to address two thousand people and argue that centuries of Church doctrine need fundamental reform. What if I freeze? What if they don’t listen? What if – "

He kissed her, cutting off the spiral. "You won’t freeze. They’ll listen. And you’re right, which makes this easier." He squeezed her hands. "Remember – you’re not attacking the Church. You’re trying to save it from people who’ve corrupted its purpose. Frame everything as returning to the Goddess’s true will, not abandoning it."

"I know. We practiced this." She took a deep breath. "But theory is different from two thousand people staring at you."

"You’ve spoken to large crowds before – "

"As the Saintess delivering approved messages. This is different. This is me, Elara, saying things that could get me killed." Her voice dropped. "Aldous isn’t going to just let this happen. He’ll try something."

"I know." Damien’s expression was cold. "My father has guards positioned throughout the forum. Your supporters are organized to counter any disruption. And I’m here. If anyone tries to hurt you, they’ll have to go through me."

[SECURITY MEASURES: Extensive]

[VALCREST GUARDS: 20 stationed discreetly]

[ELARA SUPPORTERS: 200+ organized to respond to disruption]

A bell chimed – starting signal. The forum was beginning.

Sister Catherine appeared from the wings. "Saintess, it’s time. High Priest Aldous is already on stage. He’s claiming opening speaker privilege."

"Of course he is." Elara straightened her shoulders. "Alright. Let him speak first. I’ll allow him show everyone who he really is."

Damien watched her walk onto the platform, head high despite her fear, and felt pride mix with concern.

She was magnificent. Brave. Exactly the kind of person who changed the world.

Also exactly the kind of person who got killed for it.

He moved to a position where he could watch the entire forum while remaining out of direct sight. Close enough to intervene if needed, distant enough not to overshadow her moment.

The corruption was stable at 6.1% – the past night with Elara had reinforced the anchor bond significantly. As long as he didn’t use his abilities, it wouldn’t increase.

The cold efficiency was manageable, kept at bay by recent contact and proximity to his anchor.

But if violence erupted, if he had to use shadow magic...

He’d deal with that when it happened.

[CORRUPTION: 6.1% (Stable)]

[ANCHOR BOND: Strong - recent reinforcement]

[WARNING: Power usage will accelerate corruption]

[RECOMMENDATION: Avoid combat if possible]

High Priest Aldous stood at the center platform, looking every inch the righteous authority figure. Full ceremonial vestments, holy symbols gleaming, backed by six senior clergy in formal robes.

The crowd quieted as he raised his hands.

"Faithful servants of the Goddess," his voice carried perfectly across the amphitheater. "We gather today in troubled times. Times when the very foundations of our faith are questioned. When sacred traditions are dismissed as mere doctrine. When those chosen to serve the divine instead serve worldly desires."

His eyes found Elara, standing at the platform’s edge.

"The Saintess Elara calls this forum to discuss reform. A noble word. Reform suggests improvement, correction of error, return to better ways." He paused dramatically. "But I ask you – can there be reform without humility? Can there be improvement without acknowledging what we seek to improve upon? Can there be correction when we claim the Goddess Herself approves our rebellion?"

Murmurs through the crowd – some agreeing, others uncertain.

"Saintess Elara claims divine revelation. Claims the Goddess spoke to her, approved her choices, endorsed her defiance of Church authority." Aldous’s voice grew stronger. "But the Goddess speaks through Her Church. Through centuries of accumulated wisdom. Through the Holy Council and the traditions we’ve preserved since the faith’s founding. To claim private revelation that contradicts established doctrine is the very definition of heresy."

Louder murmurs. This was good rhetoric – positioning Elara as arrogant individualist against collective wisdom.

"And what drives this claimed revelation?" Aldous turned to face Elara fully. "Not spiritual truth or even divine calling. But worldly temptation. The Saintess has taken a lover – a noble using dark powers that resemble the demons we fight. She has abandoned her vows of purity. She has chosen earthly pleasure over spiritual dedication."

Someone in the crowd shouted agreement. Others booed. The forum was already dividing.

"I do not condemn her for being human," Aldous continued, voice heavy with false sympathy. "We all face temptation. We all struggle with desire. But when we fail, we must acknowledge failure. Repent. Return to righteousness. Not claim that our failure is actually divine approval in disguise."

[ALDOUS STRATEGY: Frame Elara as self-justifying heretic]

[CROWD RESPONSE: Mixed but engaged]

[ELARA: Listening calmly, face serene]

"The Church has stood for three hundred years because we maintain standards. Because we don’t bend sacred truth to accommodate individual desires. Because we understand that righteousness requires sacrifice." He spread his arms. "Yes, sacrifice is difficult. Yes, restriction feels oppressive when we want freedom. But discipline is not tyranny. Guidance is not control. The Church protects the faithful from destructive choices, even when those choices feel liberating in the moment."

He was good, Damien admitted grudgingly.

Framing everything in ways that made the Church’s control sound caring, Elara’s freedom sound childish.
