I'm the Villain, But the Heroines Keep Choosing Me Chapter 62

They’d just watched shadow magic slaughter demons efficiently, and it had looked too much like demon powers for comfort.

"Lord Valcrest." Seria kept her voice professional. "Thank you for the assistance. That was... effective."

"You’re welcome." He was regaining his composure, the pain fading from his expression. "Though I’m curious what organized, tactically trained demons are doing in the city. It’s becoming an issue."

"You noticed the tactical coordination?"

"Hard to miss. They fought like soldiers, not beasts." His eyes met hers. "Your father...he died fighting demons with similar training, didn’t he?"

The question hit like a physical blow. "How do you know about that?"

"I make it my business to know about threats. Organized demons are significant threat." He gestured to the corpses. "These weren’t random. Someone is training them. Equipping them. Giving them intelligence on guard positions and response times."

Seria felt cold realization settling over her. "You’re suggesting someone in the city is collaborating with demons. Providing them with tactical information."

"I’m suggesting that demons this organized don’t happen by accident. And that’s more dangerous than any individual demon attack." He looked at her directly. "You’re investigating me for demon collaboration. You’re looking in the wrong direction."

[STRATEGIC PLAY: Redirecting her investigation toward real threat]

[SERIA: Forced to reconsider assumptions]

Before she could respond, Aldric arrived with a squad of Church guards, blessed sword drawn and ready for combat that was already over.

"Seria! Are you – " He stopped, taking in the scene. The dead demons. Damien standing in the center. Seria clearly unharmed but shaken.

"Lord Valcrest." Aldric’s voice went cold. "What are you doing here?"

"Saving your combat instructor from tactical demons while you were late to the fight." Damien’s voice was flat, emotionless. "You’re welcome, by the way."

"I was – the message was delayed – " Aldric looked between them, something dark flickering in his expression. "Seria, are you alright?"

"I’m fine. Lord Valcrest arrived in time." She kept her voice professional despite the complicated thoughts churning. "The demons were using squad tactics. Coordinated, trained, intelligent."

"Just like the ones those years ago." Aldric’s hand tightened on his sword hilt. "And Lord Valcrest just happened to arrive in time to save you from them. Convenient."

The implication was clear: Damien had somehow orchestrated the attack to look heroic.

"Let’s not jump to conclusions." Seria’s voice was sharp. "These demons were already engaging my guards when I arrived. Lord Valcrest appeared during the fight, not before. Unless you’re suggesting he can predict demon attacks with perfect timing?"

"I’m suggesting his timing is always suspiciously perfect." Aldric’s voice carried frustration. "Every time demons attack, he’s there. Every time someone needs saving, he appears. It’s too convenient."

"Or I’m effective at responding to threats because I actually prioritize results over appearance." Damien’s voice was cold. "But if you’d rather I let your friend die to avoid looking suspicious, I can do that next time."

"You – " Aldric started forward, hand on his sword.

"Aldric." Seria’s voice cracked like a whip. "Stand down. Lord Valcrest saved my life and my guards. I don’t recommend baseless accusations against someone who just demonstrated effective combat capability."

The hero stopped, looking stricken. "Seria, he’s – "

"He’s standing right there having just killed twelve demons while you arrived late." Her voice was harder than she’d intended. "Whatever suspicions you have, they’re secondary to the fact that he was effective when it mattered."

[RELATIONSHIP SHIFT: Seria defending Damien to Aldric]

Damien watched the exchange with cold calculation, then turned to leave. "Captain Thornwood. If you want to discuss the tactical demon issue further, I have intelligence that might be useful. My estate, tomorrow evening. Bring your investigation notes – I suspect we’re looking for the same thing from different directions."

He walked away before she could respond, shadows coiling around him like faithful pets.

Seria watched him go, then turned to find Aldric staring at her with betrayed expression.

"You’re defending him now? After everything we discussed about him being a threat?"

"I’m defending someone who just saved my life." She met his eyes directly. "And I’m questioning whether our assumptions about threats are accurate. Those demons were organized, Aldric. Trained. Someone is collaborating with them, providing intelligence. That’s the real threat we should be investigating."

"And you’re just going to take his word on that?"

"I’m going to investigate evidence wherever it leads." She started organizing her guards for cleanup and documentation. "Even if it leads somewhere uncomfortable."

Aldric looked like he wanted to argue further but couldn’t find words. He walked away, leaving Seria alone with her guards and growing doubts about everything she’d believed.

---

The next evening, Seria stood outside the Valcrest estate with her investigation journal and a head full of conflicting thoughts.

She’d spent the day analyzing the demons from last night’s attack. They were equipped with weapons made in the city. They had knowledge of guard patrol patterns. They’d specifically targeted her, suggesting intelligence on her identity and role.

Someone was collaborating with demons. Providing resources and information. And that someone had enough access to know guard operations intimately.

Which meant the threat was internal. Closer than foreign demon forces.

And Lord Damien Valcrest – who she’d been investigating as potential collaborator – had been fighting these demons more effectively than anyone.

The cognitive dissonance was becoming impossible to ignore.

She knocked.

A elderly woman answered – the Valcrest head housekeeper, Margaret. "Captain Thornwood. Lord Damien is expecting you. Study, second floor. I’ll show you up."

The estate was impressive but not ostentatious. Wealth displayed through quality rather than quantity. Everything well-maintained, functional, purposeful.

Like its owner, she thought. Then caught herself thinking that and frowned.

Margaret led her to a study that was more war room than office. Maps covered one wall, marked with demon attack locations. Intelligence reports stacked on every surface. Documents and notes creating web of information that spoke to obsessive thoroughness.

Damien stood at the map wall, wearing simple dark clothing rather than noble finery. He looked tired – dark circles under his eyes, tension in his shoulders.

"Captain Thornwood." He turned. "Thank you for coming. I wasn’t certain you would."
