The silence after the battle was heavy. Even the ocean seemed to hold its breath.
Fragments of the shattered area damaged by the Heartless drifted downward slowly like ash as the lingering darkness devoured them, vanishing into nothing before reaching the seabed. Schools of fish cautiously returned, peeking from crevices in the reef. The battlefield trembled with the residue of magical force, but the chaos had finally ended.
Helios hovered above the coral ridge, Equilibrium in hand, the keyblade once again in its unified form. His eyes lingered on it, still trying to process what had happened. The transformation had been unbidden—not activated by instinct, not summoned by will. It had acted on its own.
That troubled him more than he cared to admit.
Nearby, Kurai floated with arms folded, eyes scanning the quiet currents. Her body language was relaxed, but Helios knew her senses were sharp. If anything had stirred after the last Heartless fell, she would have torn it apart.
"You look unsettled," she said without looking at him.
She raised an eyebrow. "Because of your keyblade?"
He gave a small nod. "It reacted to something I didn't command. My light and darkness have been at war, but eventually, they found a balance. Something happened in the battle just now—like something attacked the balance inside me. Like something tried to pull it apart. The worst part is I didn't even notice it happening, only now, after close analysis, did I detect it."
"Interesting, so someone or something managed to attack you in such a way," she said, her voice even. "Mind you, it was a meticulous attack that would not be easy to pull off, much less do so without either one of us noticing. I wonder who it could be?"
Helios looked down at Equilibrium. The silver moon glinted softly in the blade's design, nestled within the black sun.
"I don't like not knowing," he murmured.
From below, motion caught his eye. The civilians of Atlantica were emerging cautiously, swimming from their homes, hidden caverns, and reef sanctuaries. They flocked toward the palace, clustering around the queen and her daughters.
Thalen floated nearby, lingering slightly apart from the crowd. Ariel hovered close to him, whispering something. Thalen tilted his head, curious but not smiling. His glowing fins pulsed in time with his breathing, steady and slow.
Kurai followed Helios' gaze. "That boy is strange."
"Remember, we still need him, so don't do anything to him," Helios muttered. "Besides seems like he's getting along with the Queen and her children. That's a connection we might need, so he helped in his own way. Come on, let's head over there."
They descended slowly toward the palace courtyard, where Queen Athena now floated at the center of attention. Her long reddish golden hair flowed behind her in elegant spirals, and though the battle had clearly shaken her, she stood tall.
"Check on the western ridge," she instructed a pair of guards. "See if any of the coral homes were damaged. Have a healer swim through the nursery garden. No one is to be left alone tonight."
A servant appeared by her side. Athena gave a nod. "Take my daughters inside and remain with them. I need to assess the damage."
The servant bowed and beckoned to the princesses. Ariel looked reluctant but obeyed after a gentle nudge from her older sister, Attina.
Athena turned to another aide. "Inform the king at once. Tell him we were attacked by strange creatures and humans on a corrupted ship from the surface world. Emphasize that it was not a surface nation. The corruption was magical in nature."
Only then did she swim forward, approaching Helios, Kurai, and Thalen. She stopped a respectful distance away, posture straight, eyes sharp.
"You saved my people and my children. Whoever you are. I thank you."
Helios inclined his head. "We responded to a disturbance. We didn't expect to get involved."
"And yet you did." Her gaze swept over the three of them. "I know you're not from Atlantica. Not from any of the neighboring realms either. Still... the people owe you. I owe you."
Kurai's eyes narrowed slightly. "We didn't come for gratitude."
"I can see that." Athena offered a faint smile. "But that doesn't mean it won't be given."
Thalen drifted forward, hovering beside Helios. Athena glanced at him with a softer expression.
"You stayed with my daughters," she said. "Protected them."
Thalen nodded. "I didn't know what music was until today. They showed me. I liked it."
Athena blinked at that, clearly surprised. "You've never heard music before?"
Thalen shook his head. "Where I come from, there was no sound. Just silence."
Helios looked at the now talkative Thalen. He didn't know the boy was even capable of putting together sentences like that. It seems the boy was further along in developing his own heart than Helios first thought.
Athena studied him with new interest. "Then it must have been a wonderful experience for you. The sounds and rhythm are magical."
She turned to Helios. "Will you stay? Even for a short while? I would like to know more about what those creatures were and who you all are. And I have questions that only warriors like you might be able to answer."
Helios glanced at Kurai. She shrugged. He looked back at the queen.
"Good," Athena said. "I would have your counsel on what you saw. And... you might want to hear what my advisors discovered during the attack. There were strange, magical traces around the shipwreck site. We've never seen magic before. I wonder if you all have"
Helios frowned. "Show me when you can."
Athena nodded. Then, her voice lowered slightly. "My people will need time to recover. They don't understand what happened just yet. The creatures were not just random beasts. They moved together with those surface dwellers, so this... was planned."
"Yes," Helios said. "I agree."
Far from the palace, deep within the ruins of an old reef sanctuary, Ursula stirred her cauldron.
The dark potion churned with cruel colors. She added a scale from a royal fin, a shard of a broken mirror, and a lock of reddish-golden hair. The reflection of the cauldron changed, and she could see and hear everything around Queen Athena.
"Helios..." she whispered. "Hmm… so they are from a different kingdom. Very well, let's keep watching."
