Limitless Ascension:The System Chosen Chapter 32

Chapter 32: Chapter 31: Partners in the Deep

The morning sun filtered through the cracked stained-glass windows of the church, painting the walls in shards of light. Ethan adjusted the strap on his new gear, the reinforced leather armor fitting snugly against his frame. Beside him, Lili stood ready in her own modest equipment—tough boots, a dark cloak, and several pouches strapped to her waist, perfect for collecting loot.

"Ready?" he asked, looking down at her.

Lili nodded sharply. "More than ready, Ethan-sama."

He winced slightly at the honorific but didn’t say anything. It wasn’t worth the argument. Besides, she seemed to enjoy saying it.

The two walked through Orario’s bustling streets and eventually passed the great stone gates of Babel. As they descended the spiral path into the Dungeon, the air grew cooler, heavier. Familiar to Ethan now—but for Lili, he noticed a shift in her steps.

"Everything alright?" he asked.

She gave him a quick glance. "Yeah. Just... It’s different being with someone."

He didn’t push for more.

The first floor welcomed them with eerie silence, only the faint growls and rustles of monsters echoing in the distance. Ethan tightened the grip on his blade. Lili stayed a few steps behind, her eyes sharp and calculating.

A goblin lunged from the shadows.

With practiced ease, Ethan sidestepped and slashed, cleaving through the monster’s chest in a single motion. The body disintegrated into blue particles, leaving behind a small magic stone. Lili darted forward, scooping it up and tucking it into her pouch.

They moved deeper.

Floor two. Then three. Monsters came in waves—kobolds, goblins, even a few war shadows. Ethan’s movements had become faster, more controlled. The training, the near-death battles—it had all honed him into something sharper.

Lili, too, proved her worth. She never hesitated, kept her position perfectly, and gathered loot with impressive speed. She was efficient and clever, watching corners, alerting Ethan of approaching threats.

By floor five, they were both breathing harder. The monsters were thicker here, more aggressive.

A small horde of goblins swarmed them near a collapsed corridor. Ethan raised his sword, slashing through two, spinning to block another. One got close to Lili, but she yanked a dagger from under her cloak and drove it into the goblin’s side with unexpected force.

He turned in time to see it crumble into particles.

"You good?" he called.

"Still breathing!" she replied, face flushed but fierce.

After several more fights, they took a short break in a quiet corner of the fifth floor. Ethan leaned against the wall, pulling out a water pouch. He handed it to Lili first.

She took it, drank, then sat beside him. "You fight like someone who’s already died once."

He looked at her, surprised. "That obvious?"

She shrugged. "I don’t know what you’ve been through, but... it shows. In your eyes. You don’t hesitate."

"I don’t have the luxury to," he said quietly. "Not anymore."

Lili didn’t pry further. She understood. Everyone in the dungeon had their reasons.

When they stood again, Ethan nodded toward a branching path. "Let’s push a little deeper. One more floor."

She didn’t hesitate. "Right behind you."

**Floor Six.**

The air here felt heavier, the walls darker. The moment they entered, they were greeted by a pair of war shadows and a single silverback.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "Stay back. I’ll handle the big one."

The silverback roared and charged. Ethan met it head-on, sword clashing against claws. Lili darted to the side, distracting the war shadows with small throwing knives while he danced with the silverback. Its strength was monstrous—each blow rattled his bones. But Ethan didn’t falter.

He ducked under a sweeping claw, drove his blade into its thigh, then rolled away as it slammed a fist into the ground where he’d stood. He could feel his heartbeat pounding in his ears, sweat trailing down his face.

Lili finished off one war shadow with a sneaky stab to the neck. The other lunged at her, but she flipped back, using the corpse of its ally as a shield just long enough for Ethan to slam his blade into the silverback’s heart.

Blue particles burst around them. The dungeon was silent again.

Lili collapsed to one knee, panting. Ethan stood tall, his chest heaving. They looked at each other—and for the first time since entering the dungeon, they smiled.

"Nice teamwork," he said.

"You’re not bad yourself, Ethan-sama," she said, grinning despite the bruises.

They gathered the loot—magic stones, monster drops—and made their way back to the surface, bloodied but victorious.

As they walked out into the light of day, Lili spoke up, quieter now.

"Thanks for trusting me."

Ethan looked down at her, then gave a rare, warm smile. "You earned it."
