Chapter 7 - 7 – Unforeseen Encounters
Ethan's feet pounded rhythmically against the pavement, each step propelling him closer to his goal. The cool night air filled his lungs, contrasting with the heat radiating from his exerted body. He had just completed his 10 km run, shaving a few seconds off his previous time. The improvement was marginal, but with only 27 days left before he would be sent to a random world, every bit counted. His muscles ached, but unlike the previous night, he could still move without collapsing. His stats were gradually increasing, each small gain a testament to his relentless training.
As he slowed to a walk, his shirt clung to his body, drenched in sweat. He wiped his brow, thinking aloud, "I need to take a shower again." The thought of warm water washing away the day's fatigue was enticing.
Turning towards the hospital entrance, he noticed Samantha standing by the door, her arms crossed and a playful smirk on her lips.
"You really don't know when to quit, do you?" she teased.
Ethan chuckled, "Just trying to keep up with my goals."
Samantha shook her head, her eyes reflecting both amusement and concern. "Well, Mr. Overachiever, you need to shower. You're all sweaty."
He grinned, "I was planning to."
They shared a laugh, the camaraderie between them growing with each interaction.
"I'll bring your dinner to your room, but please, shower first."
"Yes, ma'am," Ethan replied with a mock salute.
After parting ways, he headed to his bathroom, eager to wash off the grime. The hot water cascaded over him, soothing his tired muscles. Lost in the comfort, he realized he had forgotten to bring a towel. Muttering a curse under his breath, he decided to make a quick dash to retrieve one.
As he stepped out, water dripping from his body, he froze. Standing in the doorway was Samantha, holding a tray with his dinner. Their eyes locked, both equally surprised.
"Ehhhhhh..." Samantha's eyes widened, her cheeks flushing a deep crimson.
Ethan's face mirrored her embarrassment. "I... uh... forgot my towel."
Samantha quickly averted her gaze, her voice high-pitched, "What the heck? Cover yourself!"
He grabbed a nearby towel, wrapping it around his waist hastily. "Sorry!"
The room was thick with awkward silence. Samantha, still avoiding eye contact, placed the tray on the table, her movements stiff. "Your dinner is here."
"Thank you," Ethan mumbled, his face still flushed.
Without another word, Samantha turned on her heel and left the room, the door clicking shut behind her.
Ethan exhaled deeply, leaning against the wall. His heart raced, not from the run, but from the unexpected encounter. He dressed quickly, trying to push the image of Samantha's shocked face from his mind.
Sitting at the table, he uncovered his dinner, the aroma reminding him of his hunger. As he ate, his thoughts drifted back to the incident, a mix of embarrassment and amusement washing over him.
After finishing his meal, he retrieved the recovery potion from his drawer. The liquid shimmered faintly in the dim light. He downed it in one gulp, feeling a warm sensation spread through his body, easing the soreness in his muscles.
Lying on his bed, he stared at the ceiling, replaying the day's events. The training, the progress, and the unexpected moment with Samantha. A blush crept up his neck as he recalled her wide-eyed expression.
"What a day," he murmured to himself.
As sleep began to claim him, he made a mental note to always check for a towel before showering. With a final chuckle at his own expense, he closed his eyes, letting the day's fatigue pull him into slumber.
