Lord of the realm Chapter 87

The morning came slowly, creeping across the water like a grey ghost. Mist rose from the river in thick tendrils, wrapping around the ship and making everything beyond a few yards invisible.

The sun hung low and pale in the eastern sky, barely strong enough to penetrate the fog that seemed to cling to the water like a living thing.

Around five in the morning, the pirate ship came to a gentle halt near a small wooden dock that jutted out into the river like a finger pointing toward deeper waters.

The town beyond was modest and quiet, built entirely of timber that had weathered to a soft grey color over the years. Smoke rose from a few chimneys, suggesting that some of the inhabitants were already beginning their daily routines, but most of the settlement still slumbered in the early morning mist.

Below decks, Odessa stirred from her rest.

She had slept fitfully, her senses remaining alert for danger even in repose.

The sudden stillness of the ship told her they had reached their destination, and it was time to continue their journey by land.

Rising from the simple bunk where she had spent the night, she made her way up through the ship's narrow corridors. Her black hair was slightly tousled from sleep, but her dark eyes were sharp and alert as always.

She needed to find Jaenor and prepare for their departure before the morning grew too bright and their presence became obvious to any who might be watching.

But when she went to look for him in the places she expected—the deck, the captain's cabin, and the common area where the crew gathered—she found them empty.

Frowning slightly, she expanded her search, her senses guiding her through the ship's cramped interior.

It was the sound of quiet breathing that led her to a storage room near the stern.

What she found there made her pause in the doorway, her expression shifting through several emotions in rapid succession.

Jaenor and Saphyra lay together on a pile of sailcloth and rope, their bodies intertwined in the intimate embrace of lovers.

Both were naked, their skin gleaming with perspiration in the dim light that filtered through a small porthole.

Saphyra's hair was spread across Jaenor's chest like liquid moonlight, and her oceanic eyes were closed in peaceful satisfaction.

For a moment, Odessa simply stared.

Then her lips compressed into a thin line of displeasure.

"Jaenor," she called out, her voice carrying just enough edge to cut through whatever enchantment still clouded his mind.

Jaenor groaned and opened his eyes, blinking in confusion as consciousness returned to him. When he saw Odessa standing in the doorway, reality crashed back like a cold wave. He sat up quickly, gently disentangling himself from Saphyra's embrace, his face flushing with embarrassment.

"Odessa, I... this isn't..." he began, but the words died in his throat as he reached for his scattered clothes.

She said nothing as he hurriedly dressed, but her dark eyes missed nothing. She could see the faint glow that still clung to his skin, the residual traces of siren magic that marked him as having been thoroughly enchanted. Her jaw tightened with barely controlled anger.

By the time they reached the dock, Saphyra had also dressed and composed herself. She stood at the ship's rail, once again looking every inch the enigmatic queen she was, though her simple gown and braided hair gave her a more approachable appearance than her earlier regalia.

"I will see you again soon, Origin Bearer," she said softly, her voice carrying across the water like the sound of distant waves.

"The bond between us has been strengthened now. Distance and time mean nothing to one such as I."

As soon as the words left her mouth, Saphyra seemed to sense the wave of cold fury radiating from Odessa. The death goddess's anger was like a physical presence, making the morning mist swirl and eddy around them in unnatural patterns.

Without another word, the Siren Queen dove gracefully over the ship's rail.

She struck the water without a splash, disappearing beneath the surface as if she had never been there at all.

Moments later, the massive form of her sea serpent could be seen moving away through the mist, its glowing eyes fading into the distance like dying stars.

She left as though she had something urgent to do and from the fear of what Odessa might do to her.

Jaenor was shaking his head, hearing her words. "Her words... they feel like prophecy."

Odessa's only response was a cold glare that could have frozen fire itself.

They said their goodbyes to Aldran and the pirate crew, though the young sailor clearly wanted to ask more questions about the strange events of the night.

Jaenor clasped his friend's hand firmly, promising to send word when it was safe to do so, and then he and Odessa made their way down the gangplank to the wooden dock.

The small town beyond was just beginning to wake up, with shopkeepers opening their doors and fishermen preparing their nets for the day's work.

No one paid much attention to the two travelers who emerged from the mist, just another pair of refugees perhaps, or merchants seeking passage to the empire's interior.

As they walked through the quiet streets, Odessa's anger seemed to radiate from her like heat from a forge.

Finally, when they were well away from the docks and any listening ears, she spoke.

"Foolish boy," she said, her voice low.

Meanwhile, far from the misty river town where Jaenor was learning the consequences of his encounter with the Siren Queen, another tale was beginning to unfold in a place of very different character.

The Illumariti Coven made their home in a grand mansion that sat atop a hill overlooking the rolling city of Hanompetra.

Unlike the dark towers and foreboding castles favored by other orders, this place had been built to reflect light rather than absorb it. Its white stone walls gleamed in the sunlight, and its tall windows were designed to let in as much natural illumination as possible.
