Luke asked, "Was he a big fan of the Avengers?"
"Which superhero did he like the most?"
Luke recalled for a moment, "Then why is the tattoo on his body Captain America's shield?"
"That one was cheaper, he couldn't afford the cost of an Iron Man tattoo."
Luke associated the limited edition sneakers Kunni'er was wearing when he died with some unexpected windfall, which might very well have been the reason for his murder, considering fortune and disaster often go hand in hand.
Luke also found a book in the drawer, "Human Weakness."
It wasn't surprising to find a book in a desk, but having only one book was unusual.
"Was this book Kunni'er's?"
"Yes, he really liked it and often read it."
"No, he wouldn't let me touch this book, I didn't want to cause trouble."
"What was the relationship between you two like?"
"Uh... he was a bit reclusive, not very talkative, but he was alright, older than me but didn't bully me.
Having such a roommate was already great."
Luke picked up the book and flipped through it, finding an old photograph of a black woman stuffed inside. Judging from its condition, it seemed quite old.
The woman in the photograph had short hair and looked to be in her twenties.
Luke pointed to the photo and asked, "Who is this?"
"I don't know. I once saw Kunni'er looking at this photo, but when I asked him, he refused to tell me."
Given what had been learned so far, Kunni'er didn't seem like someone who liked to read. In other words, it might not have been the book he was interested in but instead the photograph of the woman tucked inside.
Luke turned to a young black man next to him and asked, "Find anything?"
The young black man's spirits weren't high, and he shook his head.
Luke handed the photo to the young black man, "What do you think the relationship between the person in the photo and Kunni'er might be?"
The young black man examined the photo and said, "This is an old photograph. The woman was already in her twenties then, so she should be older now. I think she might be Kunni'er's mother."
Luke looked at Carter beside him, "Did Kunni'er ever talk to you about his mother?"
"Who was Kunni'er closest to in this household?"
"It would probably be me, but we were just ordinary friends."
"Do you know if anything has happened to Kunni'er lately? Or if he has undergone any changes?"
"He hasn't come home much lately. The last time he did come back, he didn't say much and just went to bed to sleep.
Asking me is not as good as asking his good friend."
"Who is his good friend?"
They knew each other from the foster center and are very close.
I'd bet he's the person in the world who knows Kunni'er best."
"Do you know where Derek Yasuo lives?"
A black car was parked by the roadside.
Two men got out of the car and whispered to each other before walking up to a door, one after the other, "knock knock…"
After a moment, the door opened.
A bearded white man answered, sizing up the two men at his doorstep, "What do you want?"
"Does Derek live here?"
"Yes, who are you? What do you want with him?"
The black man showed his badge, "LAPD!
We're investigating a case and need to ask him some questions."
"What case? Has the kid gotten himself into trouble again?"
"Yes." The bearded white man went inside and shouted, "Derek, you come down here.
Why are the police at the door looking for you?"
No one responded inside the house.
Suddenly, a noise came from the back of the house.
The two police officers drew their guns and ran to the back of the house only to see a white teenager getting up off the ground and running into the distance.
Stop, or I'll shoot!"
The white teenager didn't look back and kept running forward.
The two LAPD officers did not hesitate to shoot.
The sound of gunfire echoed through the night.
