In the Small Garden downstairs behind the hospital back door, a little girl tottered along as if she had discovered something interesting, chasing a butterfly nonstop. While running, she also let out bell-like laughter, excitedly shouting to the man following her, “Uncle… Lie… Save… Fly!”
She was saying that there were butterflies flying.
Xi Zelie followed behind her with his long legs and slim waist, dressed simply yet exuding an air of elegance and grandeur. Around him, three bodyguards were on alert next to the butterfly-chasing little girl, ready at all times to make sure the unsteady walker wouldn’t fall.
From afar, Bae Chi saw Li Yinuo and could no longer maintain his cool demeanour; he ran over in a few brisk strides while calling out, “Nuonuo!”
The little girl, attracted by the butterfly, heard someone calling her and looked up, her grape-like big eyes instantly spotted Bae Chi. She was much more excited than when she saw the butterfly; she stopped chasing it and started running toward Bae Chi.
Her voice was milky and unclear when she excitedly called Bae Chi “brother,” her giggles sounding like a baby chick imitating a rooster’s crow.
To Bae Chi’s ears, however, it sounded like the sweetest music!
The usually proud and aloof boy who fancied himself a man was so touched by her call that his eyes reddened momentarily, and he quickened his steps even more.
He rushed to her as if flying and scooped her into his arms, scolding angrily, “Where have you run off to these past several days? Why didn’t you cry when you met strangers?”
If only she had cried out when she was taken away, he would’ve surely heard and noticed she was being kidnapped!
Nuonuo didn’t realize that he wasn’t angry but reproaching himself for failing to protect her properly. Feeling his upset mood, she blinked her big eyes, pursed her lips in a pout, and then, as if she thought of something, she held out the flower she picked as if presenting a treasure. She raised it in front of Bae Chi, flashing a toothless grin, “Bro-brother, flower.”
Bae Chi was still grappling with self-blame, pursing his thin lips and staring at her, neither reaching out to take the flower nor responding.
He certainly didn’t want her ugly flower, whose stem she had squished out of shape. The petals had also fallen off; holding such an ugly flower would only lower his aesthetic standards!
Nuonuo, young and ignorant of what contempt meant, had a beaming smile like a little sunflower. She continued to push the flower toward him, cooing in her milky voice to please him, “Flower… flower… Bro-brother… flower…”
Bae Chi glanced at her sternly before taking it, and his clouded little face suddenly cleared up, declaring righteously, “It’s ‘brother,’ not ‘bro-brother.'”
As the two little ones went back and forth with “brother” and “bro-brother,” Chi Enen and Li Beijue walked over.
Xi Zelie’s Peach Blossom Eyes swept over Li Beijue’s gaze that seemed to declare sovereignty and the holding hands, furrowing his eyebrows for a moment. He instructed the three bodyguards behind him, “Wait for me outside.”
“Yes, Young Master Lie.”
The bodyguards left quietly.
Xi Zelie returned his gaze, slightly lifted the corner of his mouth, and greeted Chi Enen, “Enen.”
“Sorry to have kept you waiting,” Chi Enen responded with a natural and easygoing manner, just like interacting with a friend.
