Married My Enemy To Save My Family Chapter 30

Chapter 30: 30. Mirrors and Masquerades

They had walked through fire, but now the path led them back to the city.

Elara stood at the ridge overlooking Virelith—once a Mairee stronghold, now a city of wary freedom. Morning sun glinted off the glass spires, and smoke trails from recent battles still lingered like ghosts.

"Smells like victory and ash," Damien said, stepping beside her.

She half-smiled. "Mostly ash."

Nova, ever efficient, came through the comms. "We have contact inside. Former Mairee technocrat offering intel. Says he’s got a plan to sabotage what’s left of their data hubs."

"Name?" Elara asked.

"Galen Rhyne. Claims he used to run their psychological conditioning program."

Damien made a face. "Ah, great. One of those geniuses."

Inside the repurposed opera house in Virelith, they met Galen.

He wore a tweed coat far too dramatic for the occasion, his hair slicked back like a retired villain in search of applause. He greeted them with a bow.

"Commander Elara. Mr. Voss. A pleasure. Tea?"

"Spare me the theatre," Elara said. "Talk."

Galen smirked. "So serious. I liked you better when you were still a myth."

"And I liked you better when you were in hiding."

Galen sighed. "Very well. Mairee’s remnants are consolidating. There’s one last data prism, hidden inside their masquerade vault in the central archives."

Damien raised an eyebrow. "Masquerade vault?"

"Used for storing alternate persona programs. Fake memories. Simulated guilt trials. All the pretty masks."

Elara folded her arms. "Why tell us this?"

Galen leaned forward. "Because if that data falls into rebel hands, everyone finds out what they were made to forget. Including you."

The central archives were guarded by tech more paranoid than any army.

Disguises were prepared—masks encoded with false retinal prints. Jeren grumbled as he adjusted his high-society outfit. "I look like a banker’s third mistress."

"You wish," Nova shot back.

Elara stood regal in deep crimson, a mask of obsidian feathers shadowing her features. Damien wore black and gold, playing the aloof strategist.

Inside, music played. Dancers swirled. Lights refracted like dreams.

They moved through the ballroom like whispers, downloading files from hidden terminals behind wine racks and frescoes.

"Tell me this isn’t your idea of a date night," Damien muttered.

"Only if you survive it," Elara replied.

In the heart of the vault, Elara found a mirror unlike the others. It shimmered.

"Do you trust me?" Damien asked quietly.

She nodded.

Together, they stepped through.

Inside: a simulation chamber.

A little girl sat at a piano. Elara’s heartbeat froze.

"That’s... me."

A projection of her father stood over the child-Elara. "Play perfectly, or you lose everything."

Damien reached for her, but Elara moved first. She stepped forward, placing her hand on the girl’s shoulder.

"You don’t have to play their song anymore."

The scene shattered. The chamber trembled.

Nova’s voice cracked in. "Extraction point in three minutes. But you’ve triggered security. Move!"

Elara and Damien ran, vaulting over data conduits and dodging collapsing walls. Jeren and Lyne provided cover from above, disabling drones.

As they reached the exit, the entire vault began to sink.

Galen’s voice echoed through the system. "Bravo. You’re better actors than I gave you credit for."

"You used us," Elara growled.

"I gave you clarity. Now you know what they took, and what they made."

Damien fired a final round into the collapsing support beam, crushing the comms relay. "Talk too much, that one."

Back at base, the team sat around a firepit. For once, there was laughter.

Jeren imitated Galen’s voice, nose in the air. "’Tea, anyone?’"

Lyne rolled her eyes. "I swear if he resurfaces again, I’m hacking his hairline."

Damien handed Elara a cup of synth-coffee. "So... would you call that a successful infiltration or an existential crisis in costume?"

Elara laughed, honest, deep.

"Both. Definitely both."

He raised his cup. "To masks broken. And truths reclaimed."

Just before midnight, Lyne knocked on Elara’s door.

"There’s more. The data we recovered? Some of it’s still encrypted. But there’s one phrase in every file. Repeated. Coded deep."

"What is it?"

Lyne hesitated.

"Project Requiem."

Elara felt her blood turn cold.
