Married My Enemy To Save My Family Chapter 32

Chapter 32: 32. Vault of Echoes

The sea was deceptively calm above Dalseren. Beneath, the pressure could crush a ship, but what Elara and her team feared more was what waited at the vault.

Nova manned the helm of their stealth submersible, The Wraith, eyes fixed on flickering sonar screens. "We’re approaching the trench," she announced. "Coordinates align. Vault’s buried under seven layers of bedrock and electromagnetic interference. They really didn’t want this found."

Jeren exhaled, adjusting his neural visor. "Requiem isn’t just a weapon. It’s a truth they buried. We’re about to exhume history."

Damien glanced at Elara. "You ready to dig up your ghosts?"

"I don’t have a choice anymore," she whispered. "They left pieces of me down here. It’s time I retrieved them."

The Wraith reached the trench. Lights scanned jagged terrain, finally revealing a seamless obsidian structure, massive and humming with latent energy.

"There it is," Lyne said. "The Vault."

They donned their suits and emerged into the abyss, magnetic boots anchoring them to the vault’s surface.

As Nova deployed a pulse disruptor to disable the vault’s outer field, Elara’s HUD pinged. A name flickered across her display.

REQUIEM: ACCESS GRANTED

"I didn’t authorize—" she began.

The vault opened.

Inside, lights flickered on, revealing walls lined with mirrored panels. Each one reflected not their physical forms, but memories, snapshots of their lives, twisted.

Elara saw herself at seven, crying beside her father’s casket. Then again at sixteen, running from a lab, data chip in hand, hunted.

"This place isn’t just a vault," Damien muttered. "It’s a prison for pain."

Jeren froze. One mirror showed his sister, eyes glazed, repeating the word Requiem.

"She wasn’t a researcher," he said, voice breaking. "She was a test subject."

Lyne, scanning the panels, suddenly shouted. "Someone’s overriding the vault’s system, remotely. We’re not alone."

Lights dimmed. A voice echoed.

"Welcome, Elara. My daughter by design."

Elara’s heart pounded. "Father?"

A hologram flickered into being, Dr. Cassian Myles, her presumed-dead father. Aged, haggard, and pre-recorded.

"If you’re seeing this, I am likely already a casualty of my own ambition," the message said. "Requiem was meant to cleanse memory to prevent war. But it was used to create perfect soldiers soulless, obedient. Your empathy made you the key."

Elara stepped closer, fists clenched. "You let them tear me apart."

"You survived," the hologram said. "Which means you can finish this. Requiem’s core is behind the inner seal. Destroy it, and you destroy the system."

The hologram ended.

Damien rested a hand on her shoulder. "Let’s finish what he started—and correct what he broke."

Through a final corridor, they entered the core chamber. At its center floated a crystalline AI core, surrounded by neural tendrils feeding on memory streams.

"This... thing is alive," Nova whispered.

Elara approached. The core pulsed in sync with her heartbeat.

Suddenly, tendrils lashed out, wrapping around her. She didn’t resist.

Visions flooded her—wars, betrayals, joys, hopes. All from different lives.

She was every person Requiem had ever absorbed.

Then her own memories surfaced—her first flight, her mother’s lullaby, Damien’s hand pulling her to safety.

"You don’t own me," she growled.

She tore free, slamming the disruptor into the core.

It shattered.

The vault began to quake. Systems overloaded. The mirrored walls fractured, releasing echoes.

"Time to go!" Lyne shouted.

They sprinted back to The Wraith, navigating falling debris and corrupted memory ghosts—phantom echoes lashing out.

Nova piloted them up as the vault imploded. From above, it looked like the sea swallowing a secret.

As they breached the surface, gasping, sun breaking over the horizon, Elara allowed herself a smile.

"Requiem is over."

Damien, beside her, added, "But the war for truth just started."
