Married My Enemy To Save My Family Chapter 40

Chapter 40: 40. Shifting Loyalties

The Wraith cruised through a nebula’s edge, its hull refracted in shimmering pinks and violets. The crew was tense. Valen’s confession still echoed in the silent corridors.

In the cockpit, Elara stared at the navigation chart but wasn’t seeing it. Damien entered, the door hissing shut behind him.

"You sure about keeping him aboard?" he asked, arms crossed.

"No," she admitted. "But I know betrayal when I see it. And his eyes didn’t lie."

Damien sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "You trust too easily."

"And you don’t trust at all," she countered. "That’s what makes us work."

Nova sat alone in the galley, the encrypted offer from Republic Command still tucked away in her personal files. She stirred a cup of synth-tea, watching steam curl like smoke signals.

Her datapad buzzed. Another message. Urgent.

We need confirmation. Deliver the target. Deadline approaching.

Nova’s hand trembled as she erased the message. She didn’t want this anymore. But turning her back now might brand her a traitor to both sides.

She looked up to find Valen watching her from the hall.

"You ever feel like your loyalties are just illusions?" she asked.

Valen stepped closer. "Loyalties change. People change. What matters is who you choose to be now."

Damien organized a training session in the cargo bay, using it as an excuse to gauge everyone’s stability. Sparring droids circled as Elara faced off against Nova.

Their movements were sharp, almost hostile.

"You hesitated," Elara noted after a near-miss.

"Wasn’t trying to kill you," Nova replied, breathing heavily.

"Might need to, someday."

Nova froze. "Is that a threat?"

"It’s reality," Elara said, turning away. "I don’t want it to come to that. But if you’re lying to us... I’ll know."

The room chilled. Nova said nothing.

Valen and Elara worked together in engineering to stabilize their damaged cloaking field. As they adjusted the coupling arrays, an encrypted data cache flickered into life from the ship’s old logs.

Valen’s eyes widened. "This isn’t from us. Someone’s been using our systems as a relay."

Elara leaned closer. "The transmission path... it’s heading into Drift sector 94-G."

"Uncharted," Valen muttered. "And dangerous."

"Which means it’s probably where we need to go."

Later that night, Damien confronted Nova in the engine room.

"You’ve got secrets. I can smell it. You’ve had that look since we left Ferrix."

Nova stepped back. "And what if I do? You gonna chain me next to Valen?"

"Not yet," Damien replied. "But one more lie, and I won’t ask next time."

"I never wanted this mission to become personal," she said, voice cracking.

"It became personal the moment we all chose each other over orders."

They gathered in the command center.

Elara laid out the decrypted coordinates. "There’s a signal source embedded in this quadrant. Same encryption as that Replicant code."

Valen nodded. "It’s either a trap or a lead to who’s playing both sides."

Nova stepped forward. "I say we go. We’re running out of time."

Damien looked at her. "You sure?"

She met his eyes. "I’m done running from who I used to be."

Elara nodded. "Set course for sector 94-G."

Outside, the nebula glowed like the warning light of an approaching storm.

Deep within sector 94-G, a cloaked station powered up.

A Replicant commander viewed the Wraith’s trajectory.

"They’ve taken the bait," it said to a shadowed figure beside it.

The figure stepped into the light, revealing a face

identical to Elara’s.

"Good," Elara’s clone said. "It’s time she met the rest of the family"
