As Irvin lay there bleeding and in pain, he had all the time in the world to think about what had gone wrong. The one thing he couldn't understand was why a second mortal coil senior would lurk on top of the roof for hours and tail his carriage like a bandit.
If it was really a second mortal coil cultivator, if they wanted to kill him or capture him, they were more than capable of grabbing him off the streets. There is just nothing he could have done to stop them.
Yet, they hid themselves and trailed him. This fooled him into preparing an ambush for them.
If he had known that they were this strong, he would have run away. He clearly had the opportunity to do so, but he returned with his men to surround the second mortal coil cultivator.
He couldn't wrap his head around it. He said to himself, "It doesn't make sense. Who have I offended to warrant someone coming after me?"
He rarely has the opportunity to interact with cultivators at the second mortal coil. But he would be lying if he said he hasn't offended people that might be related to the second mortal coil cultivators.
Just recently, he killed a bastard from the Dyson family. But that is how far he is willing to go to offend someone so powerful.
He doesn't dare to attack a direct relative of a second mortal coil senior. Last he heard, the Arthur boy was a bastard of a weak mother. So he can't figure out how he managed to create this enemy.
He looked around briefly and saw blood and body parts flying about. This sight was complemented with the sounds of grown men wailing and calling for their mothers.
From what he saw, the assailant was too fast. He was crushing everyone easily. He didn't even use his force against them, yet they stood no chance.
Irvin couldn't continue looking because blood splashed into his eyes. But from the little he saw, he knew he was unlikely to escape tonight.
Not that there was much of a fight to see because the whole thing lasted less than 10 seconds. In those 30 seconds, six people managed to escape while six people were detained.
He has seen cultivators at the second mortal coil fight, so he knows how powerful and fast they are. Even enemies at the 10th transformation of the first mortal coil using weapons will be helpless against a barehanded cultivator at the first transformation of the second mortal coil.
So he gave up on any thought of sneaking away. Instead, he tore off his shirt to tie off his stump and stop it from bleeding.
After the fight, Arthur returned to Irvin and kicked him in the stomach. Iring grunted but didn't dare complain.
Arthur pointed at the large lizard he was carrying earlier and asked, "Is this your pet?"
Irvin held his bleeding stump and replied in a hurry, "Yes, sir. It is my gold-tongued lizard."
Arthur nodded. Then he stepped on the lizard's head and crushed it beneath his foot.
Irvin whimpered as more blood splashed onto his face. His reaction made Irvin smile and ask, "How does it feel to lose something you love?"
Irvin replied, "I didn't actually love it. It is not even mine. I borrowed it to…"
Arthur gritted his teeth and kicked him in the stomach again. This time Irvin groaned for a long time.
Arthur looked around and saw the driver whimpering in a corner. He ignored the driver and grabbed Irvin's head. Then he pulled the hair and used it to drag Irvin away.
He went to the edge of city and entered an abandoned house. The house was shabby and decripit, but it had the privacy needed for him to have a quiet chat with Irvin.
Irvin began to beg as soon as he saw that they were alone. He said, "Please, sir, ask me anything you want. I will answer to the best of my abilities. I am at your disposal. Just please spare my life."
Arthur liked the sight of Irvin begging for his life very much. It made him chuckle.
Then he patted Irvin's cheek and said, "Good boy. Who asked you to kill Arthur Dyson?"
Irvin replied hurriedly, "It was the society of thieves who hired me. They are in charge of the gangs in the city. You have angered them many times, so they wanted revenge."
"Really? Who are these people in the society of thieves?"
Irvin replied without holding anything back, "They used to be three, but one of them was killed by you when you came to the city. His name was Ray. The other two are Ron and Rob. These three are the R-brothers, and they are the bosses of the society of thieves."
Arthur asked, "How did you know that I was tailing you, and how did you set up that ambush?"
"When I heard that my friends were dying, I went to investigate. I borrowed the gold tongue lizard and took it to their places."
"The lizard sensed the same aura in those places. It can't track people, but it can tell when someone it has sensed before is close to it. I carried it around to use it to find you."
"Tonight was windy, so it was able to sense that you were around. I entered the carriage but slipped out of it on the way. I didn't let the carriage drop. I just jumped out of it while it was moving."
"The carriage continued to the destination I gave it. I brought some men to go ahead to wait at that destination. Then you showed up to question the driver."
"I only wanted to speak, sir. I didn't plan to fight. I just wanted to know why you were killing my friends, and I would have let you go."
Arthur didn't believe what Irvin said about letting him go after questioning him. He knew it was just an attempt by Irvin to make him lenient. But he wasn't fooled by it.
