They would have loved to leave things at that, but it just so happened that the leaders of the society of thieves died the day before Jake died. This could either be a coincidence, or the person who killed the R brothers was also responsible for the death of Jake.
They wanted to believe the latter as they were in dire need of a scapegoat. So they began investigating who could have killed the R brothers.
Fortunately, they didn't need to do much investigation about this. Apparently, word on the street was that the Black Mantis group was at war with the society of thieves.
Most of the issue about the cause of the war wasn't clear. All they knew was that the Black Mantis group did something for the society of thieves and wasn't paid in full. So the Black Mantis group began hunting the gangs.
They dug a little deeper by interrogating members of the Black Mantis group. But all they knew was that the society of thieves owed them money, and their leader asked them to disrupt the business of the society of thieves and even kill them.
Seeing as the leader of the society of thieves was a cultivator at the second mortal coil, the two guards decided to back off while they could.
They thought about bringing the captured members of the Black Mantis group back to the compound for the murder of Jake. After all, the way Jake died proved that it was an experienced group that killed him.
But they didn't do that because they would have to explain why the Black Mantis group was fighting the society of thieves and how Jake is related to the society of thieves.
They would also be offending the second mortal coil cultivator, so they didn't do that. They had to find other, much weaker scapegoats.
They also thought about using the public enemy of the gangs and the society of thieves as the scapegoat.
That public enemy is one Arthur Dyson. He was a bastard, so he should know about the death curse in the true children of the family and should know how best to avoid it.
But he didn't fit the bill of a scapegoat because both his mother and father were powerful, so they wouldn't be able to get away with using him as a scapegoat.
Besides, they would still have to explain how Jake was related to the gangs if they wanted to pin the murder of Jake on Arthur based on his enmity with the gangs.
At the end of the day, they found the owner of the restaurant that Jake went to the night of his death and pinned the murder on him.
According to their investigation, Jake had been invited by the R brothers that night. Then he was abducted by the R brothers, who took him away by force.
It was the owner of the restaurant who told them this. The man told them this in order to absolve himself of guilt. But it only backfired.
The fact that the two guards were in desperate need of a scapegoat and the owner of the restaurant had knowledge of the relationship between the society of thieves and Jake put the poor man in the right place for the wrong thing.
According to the instructions of Jake's widow, they had to kill the owner of the restaurant to make sure that Jake's reputation isn't ruined. And according to eyewitnesses, Jake was last seen in this restaurant.
So everything lined up perfectly. They killed the man to shut him up. They also killed every worker in the restaurant as they were accessories to the crime.
That was also to prevent Jake's relationship with the society of thieves and their false accusations from being exposed. Then they brought the owner's corpse back to the Dyson family, claiming that they had killed him because he had resisted arrest.
The boss of the guards was happy with their work. Jake's widow was also happy with their work. The guards were rewarded handsomely for their hard work and dedication. Everyone was happy about the arrangement.
If there was one person who was unhappy, it was the family of the man who was accused of killing Jake and the family of every worker in the restaurant who were killed to silence.
But their opinions didn't matter because even the boss of the Black Mantis group, who hadn't been paid for the assassination of Arthur, was satisfied with the way everything turned out.
Jake was dissatisfied when Arthur's corpse wasn't presented to him as proof of a job well done. He refused to pay until it was confirmed that Arthur was truly dead.
The boss was not happy with this decision but thought it was reasonable. But weeks and months passed by without Arthur being seen. So the boss thought Arthur was dead and began reaching out to Jake to pay up.
Unfortunately, Jake didn't respond to the boss. So the boss instructed the members of his group to harass the society of thieves and their gangs.
His instruction was to simply harass them. He didn't ask them to go to war with the society of thieves. He only wanted to disrupt the activities of the society of thieves so that Jake would pay the money he owed.
But his instructions led to something else when many people from the Black Mantis turned up dead. It was then that they went to war and began killing each other.
He knows how it all went down. Jake had become furious with him after he ordered the harassment. So Jake began killing the members of his group.
The boss is sure of this because it was the members of the Black Mantis group that died first. The Scarred Raven in particular had complained about the death of his connections and other members of group.
The boss had given him a lizard to identify the killer. The Scarred Raven succeeded in doing this and even ambushed someone who turned out to be a cultivator at the second mortal coil.
