But she felt somewhat relieved knowing that these two were not doggedly pursuing her because of what happened at Entertainment City or Gu Annan’s scandal.
They were stalking her under the assumption that she had some unclear romantic involvement with Bai Lingyun.
“Did you hear? Sister Chen got fired,” Tang Xiao whispered as she came over.
Lu Wanwan was writing a draft and looked up, asking, “Really?”
Tang Xiao pouted, “Serves her right. Who knows what she was thinking, framing you like that just because Bai Lingyun didn’t approach her. I just overheard her explaining to the editor-in-chief. She claimed she wanted to create a big news story, originally planning to take the photo herself, but then Star Headlines beat her to it.”
As they were speaking, Sister Chen walked out, her face ashen.
She glared at Lu Wanwan and Tang Xiao with resentment.
“What are you looking at, taking joy in my misfortune?” Sister Chen was filled with bitterness. “I’ve worked at this newspaper for years, and to be dismissed over such a trivial matter–what kind of lousy company is this? I despise it! You just wait, today you can dismiss me easily, but tomorrow, if any error occurs, you’ll be swept out just the same! My today will be your tomorrow!”
After packing up her things, Sister Chen huffed loudly and strutted out of the office.
Even though she was the one getting sacked, her demeanor was as if she had been the one to fire the boss.
With the sharp-tongued Sister Chen gone from the team, Lu Wanwan immediately felt a great deal of relief.
However, just before lunch break, she received an unexpected notice.
“We must act as a team from now on and can’t chase stories on our own?” Tang Xiao followed up in astonishment. “This isn’t a special rule just for our team, is it? Ridiculous.”
Lu Wanwan had her suspicions, but casually said, “It’s nothing, just a minor issue.”
She suddenly remembered Xu Yuan’s words that day, questioning if there was something fishy about her being paid so much.
And the editor-in-chief’s improved attitude towards her lately, as well as this new rule against acting alone.
At first, she thought that she might be considered a recent hero of the agency, thus the editor-in-chief was treating her differently.

She had this suspicion, but she knew Gu Annan well enough to realize that if she asked him directly, she would never get a confirmation from his mouth.
“Aren’t you working this afternoon?”
With her bag slung over her shoulder, Lu Wanwan nodded, “There’s something at school, I need to prepare for my thesis.”
Tang Xiao, reminded of her own thesis, felt overwhelmed. “Your tutor is so nice, I’m so jealous. I really want to switch classes. Go ahead, and if you see our ruthless tutor, tell him I’ll hand in my work over the weekend.”
She didn’t call for the driver who usually took her to work but instead went to the bus stop out of habit.
Going back to school meant she first had to return to her dorm.
Recalling her previous abrupt departure, Lu Wanwan brought lots of snacks for Taozi and as compensation.
Approaching the door of her dorm, her hands full with plastic bags, she struggled to find her keys.
But when she reached the door, she noticed it was ajar.
