Mr. CEO's Ex-Wife: A Cunning Comeback Chapter 29

From the woman's ranting, Kane figured out that she was Kate's mother.

Like mother, like daughter.

He was just a kid, yet both of them wanted him gone.

His head throbbed from hanging upside down.

The cold wind on the balcony made his fear grow. He knew when to back down.

"So, you came to see me, Grandma. Are you looking for the gift Auntie Kate gave me? I know where it is. I'll take you there."

Ruby's eyes lit up. She hadn't expected the boy to stay so calm or assume she was just visiting.

"Okay. Take me there, and I'll buy you candy."

She saw her chance. The kid was gullible. Now, she just had to play along.

The boy must have hit his head too hard when he fell off the cliff.

Even after being put down, Kane's head still throbbed. He rubbed it gently and took small, wobbly steps out of the bedroom.

Ruby stayed close behind him.

From a distance, Mr. Charles, the butler, walked over with a tray.

The warm scent of freshly baked egg tarts filled the air.

"Railer, the egg tarts are ready. They're chocolate flavored," he called out.

Kane's vision blurred.

Before the butler could reach him, Kane's body swayed. Then, he collapsed.

Mr. Charles nearly had a heart attack.

Forgetting about the egg tarts, he rushed over. "Railer! Railer! What's wrong? Someone call Dr. Philip and inform Mr. Wilson!"

Ruby was stunned. "What's wrong with this kid? He was fine just now!"

By the time she snapped out of it and reached to pick Kane up, the butler blocked her.

"Mrs. Bently, Railer is sick, and we're handling it. Please excuse us."

His tone was sharp as he carried Kane straight to the third floor.

Mr. Charles had no proof, but Railer had been perfectly fine, eating and watching TV until Mrs. Bently showed up.

Mrs. Bently had gone upstairs when no one was watching.

A few minutes later, Railer collapsed.

Mr. Charles couldn't ignore the suspicion creeping into his mind.

He had seen everything as someone who had served in the Wilson residence for years.

He had watched Railer grow up.

The boy had already endured so much, and just when he finally had his voice, another disaster struck.

The butler's heart ached for him.

Ruby was annoyed by the butler's cold treatment, but she knew she couldn't stay.

His sharp eyes told her he suspected she had something to do with Railer's sudden collapse.

Fine. I'll deal with this later. I'll just ask Daniel for help.

With that thought, she turned to leave, only to come face-to-face with Daniel, surrounded by a large group of people.

Seeing Daniel return, Ruby knew she had no way out. She quickly put on a pitiful act, tears welling in her eyes.

"You're finally back, Mr. Wilson. I need to talk to you," she whined.

Daniel frowned but didn't respond. Instead, he gestured to the group behind him to leave.

Understanding the cue, Ashton led the security team away.

At the same time, Philip arrived and headed upstairs instantly.

Ruby's heart swelled with excitement as she looked towards Daniel—the perfect son-in-law in her eyes.

He had a commanding presence that could silence a room.

So what if the Bentlys were in financial trouble?

The Wilsons were the definition of wealth and power in Easthan.

And Daniel was the man in charge of everything.

Daniel stood in a crisp black shirt paired with a flawless vest and suit jacket. His shirt was buttoned to the collar, and a coat rested on his arm.

His sharp brows and cold gaze only added to his distant aura.

"What are you doing here, Mrs. Bently?" he asked coldly.

"Kate's in the hospital and she was really shaken up. People online are saying awful things about her. Mr. Wilson, you have to defend her! They're trying to ruin her reputation. There's no way Kate would—"

"Sir, Railer is awake, but he's not looking good," Mr. Charles suddenly interrupted them flatly. "I tried speaking to him, but he just stared into space."

Daniel's expression darkened.

Without another word, he strode up the stairs.

"This can wait, Mrs. Bently."

Hearing that Railer was awake, Ruby shrank back, quietly inching toward the door.

"Since you're here, you should check Railer before leaving, Mrs. Bently."

Mr. Charles blocked her path, making it clear she had no choice.

Upstairs, Kane lay in bed with his face paled. He stared at the ceiling, waiting for the right moment to wake up when Mr. Charles called the doctor.

The sound of footsteps approached. Kane turned his head.

Daniel strode quickly, reaching out to check Kane's forehead.

Philip had already finished his examination.

"He suffered a nasty shock, but he never left the house. What exactly had happened?"

Mr. Charles entered and swiftly interrupted. "It was my mistake. Railer was left alone with a stranger."

That stranger was Ruby.

"We checked the surveillance footage. Mrs. Bently entered Railer's room without permission. Ten minutes later, he walked out and collapsed."

Ruby, captivated by the bodyguards, felt her heart pounded harshly against her chest.

She lifted her eyes and looked into Daniel's cold, unreadable eyes.

She suddenly felt her throat tightened.

"Mr. Wilson, I..." she stammered.

"Don't blame Grandma, Daddy."

Kane grabbed Daniel's arm and held it tightly.

"Grandma was just playing a game with me. It's my fault. My head started hurting."

Hearing Kane's words, Ruby stiffened. Her hands trembled slightly upon a closer look.

Her strange behavior caught Daniel's sharp eyes.

Her reaction made it clear that it was no ordinary game.

Daniel's eyes snapped toward Mrs. Bently. His eyes glint coldly and barely hid the ruthless fury beneath them.

"Tell me, Rai. What game were you playing?"

Kane lifted his foot and placed it in Daniel's palm. His smile was innocent.

"She grabbed my foot and swung me upside down—"

Ruby collapsed onto the floor and her face was drained of color.

Daniel's jaw tightened. His voice came out in a sharp hiss.

"You swung him by the foot... on the balcony?"

His expression turned menacing as he gave Ruby the most dangerous stare she had ever seen.

"You really know how to have fun, Mrs. Bently."

"It was just harmless fun with Rai, Mr. Wilson! I'm his grandmother. I would never hurt him!" Ruby insisted, refusing to admit she had tried to get rid of the boy.
