In the top-floor card room, Nicholas Croft, Felix Shaw, Evander Lancaster, and another unknown man had already arrived at the club ahead of time. The group of men lounged on the sofas, idly chatting while smoking.
"Why hasn’t big bro arrived yet?" Felix Shaw glanced at his watch after flicking his sleeve. He was almost always the first to arrive at every gathering, but today, his childhood friend returning from overseas was running late.
Evander Lancaster took a drag of his cigarette and scoffed, "Waiting for his sick beauty at home. You guys should know, bringing a woman out is the most troublesome thing!"
"Are you saying big bro is bringing Olivia?" Felix Shaw frowned in disbelief. Although Olivia Zane had always followed them since she was little, bringing one’s woman to this kind of men’s gathering was indeed quite awkward.
"No, it’s that icy beauty from his house." Evander Lancaster tilted his head back and blew a smoke ring, somewhat dismissive.
"That wicked woman?" Almost subconsciously, Felix Shaw blurted out.
"Felix!" Nicholas Croft frowned and admonished in a low voice, reminding him that the woman who warmed a brother’s bed, no matter how unworthy, should not be spoken ill of behind her back.
"Heh," Evander Lancaster took another drag and blew another smoke ring, his thin lips curling into a careless look.
"Third bro, better to speak some good words, lest one day big bro has a change of heart, you never know."
"Pah!" Felix Shaw spat forcefully, "Unless big bro is blind, he’d never fall for such a vicious woman!"
"That’s not something you can say for certain," Evander Lancaster exhaled another smoke ring, his crossed legs shaking lightly.
"Perhaps big bro has already taken a fancy to her."
"Pah, pah, pah! What a jinx," Evander Lancaster’s remark earned him a series of spits from Felix Shaw, who finally spat out vehemently, "I bet big bro won’t fall for that kind of woman!"
"What if he has?" Evander Lancaster eyed Felix Shaw with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
"If big bro falls for her I’ll gouge out my own eyes!"
Evander Lancaster snorted coldly and looked away, "Then you better get ready to gouge out your eyes."
The two argued while the other two men in the card room remained silent throughout.
Nicholas Croft didn’t join in because he simply didn’t want to interfere with his brother’s personal matters, while the other, Daniel Armstrong, although quiet, had his sharp eyes narrowed tightly, fiercely puffing on the cigarette between his fingers as if scheming something.
