"Excuse me for interrupting, but which company are you from?" Mia Foster asked with confusion. Elizabeth White’s name sounded familiar, but she couldn’t remember ever meeting this woman.
"Miss Foster, I’m not an employee of any company; I’m an artist, currently filming a movie," Elizabeth White said, her lips curling into an unmistakable sneer as she introduced herself.
"But... what does that have to do with me?" Mia became even more perplexed, a bad premonition welling up inside her.
"I have no connection with Miss Foster, however..." Elizabeth drew out her words deliberately, "I am pregnant with Felix’s child."
As Elizabeth’s words fell, Mia felt a dizzying sensation in her head, as if something had suddenly exploded, leaving her mind completely blank, to the point where she couldn’t focus on anything else Elizabeth continued to prattle about.
It finally dawned on her. The reason Felix Shaw had been reluctant to touch her throughout their marriage... was because of the existence of this woman.
"Miss Foster, are you listening?" Seeing Mia’s prolonged silence, Elizabeth spoke up with a reminder.
Suppressing the discomfort in her heart, Mia regained her meticulous composure typical of her work environment, "I’m listening. If you have something to say, please speak."
She didn’t believe that Elizabeth had called her just to inform her of being pregnant with Felix’s child; there surely must be some conditions she wanted to negotiate.
With a light chuckle, Elizabeth continued, "Miss Foster, you really impress me. To remain so calm when faced with such a situation."
"Miss White, my time is precious. If there’s nothing else, I’m going to hang up."
"I would like to speak with you in person."
"About what? About how you seduced a married man and got pregnant by my husband in an attempt to climb the social ladder? Miss White, I think you’ve dialed the wrong number. Since it’s my husband’s child you’re carrying, you should be calling him!"
Mia said bluntly. To claim she wasn’t angry would be a lie; Felix Shaw had been telling her he didn’t have another woman all this time while secretly getting another woman pregnant behind her back.
Proud as she was, she could give her all to him but would not allow him to deceive her.
"Miss Foster, are you not the least bit curious about me? I think, if possible, we should meet and let you see for yourself the kind of woman your husband has chosen..."
On the phone, the provocative undertone in Elizabeth’s voice was clear. Mia Foster was not a weak woman; the stronger her adversary, the stronger she became. Since this woman had thrown down the gauntlet, backing down was not in her nature.
Furthermore, even if she was to divorce Felix, she wouldn’t be so magnanimous as to let them have their way!
She promptly agreed to meet Elizabeth and, after hanging up, booked a ticket to S city.
After work and dinner, Mia announced she was going on a business trip. While she packed her clothes casually, she questioned Felix, seemingly without any hidden motive, "Felix, during the time we’ve been together, have you been in contact with other women?"
Watching the woman busy organizing clothes with downcast eyes, Felix Shaw’s gaze flickered as he touched his nose and said, "With all the trouble at home, I’ve hardly had the mind for anything else."
Mia lifted her gaze to him, aware that he unconsciously touched his nose when he felt guilty. Without further comment, she focused on packing a few clothing items into her suitcase, went to bed, and turned off the lamp on her side, leaving Felix with her back.
She had put a lot of effort into this relationship but had not received a shred of his sincerity in return. The feeling of being deceived chilled her heart and drained her of the desire to continue fighting for it.
