He was not really starving and had to eat something, but he wanted to see Zhao Yiqiu getting upset. Since Zhao Yiqiu did not want him to have breakfast with Jiang Shuang, then he was definitely going to. Therefore, he did not care if his portion was ready or not. He just wanted to eat something here!
Aunt Nan had a very complicated look on her face, but the Queen, who had been quiet, said weakly. “Aunt Nan, go and get the chopsticks and bowls ready.”
Only then did Aunt Nan go unhappily. The King showed a smile and a look of pride.
He said to De Fu next to him. “There are way too few servants in the town. De Fu, go and get some more staff for the kitchen, in case troubles come all the way. We need to have things ready at all times. The Queen has been living in the court for a long time, and she has always had things planned neatly ahead of time.”
De Fu more or less understood the point, so he set to work directly.
There were very few servants in the town since the Empress Dowager had been in charge of that. Most of the staff the Empress Dowager dispatched were just military and imperial doctors, and only a couple of servants were in the kitchen. Therefore, the service was not very good. Everything was fine when the Queen was alone, but with the King here, the town had to be changed.
De Fu understood clearly that the King had the intention of bringing as many people to the town as there were in the Weiyang Palace. Therefore, they needed to have more than one cook.
De Fu got down to business directly.
The medical meals prepared by Aunt Nan had arrived too.
The King kept on eating the medical meals in satisfaction, even though the food was not very tasty. Zhao Yiqiu was already gone, but the King believed that Zhao Yiqiu was watching them from some corner not faraway. However, he was happy since Zhao Yiqiu was not. He had just eaten two mouthfuls when the Queen put down her chopsticks.
She drank up the medical soup with her eyes closed, then she said with exhaustion. “I am tired, I need to go inside first.”
Having said this, she asked Aunt Nan to help her in.
The King was startled and looked at the Queen in surprise. “Are you going inside first?”
He had just started breakfast! When they were at the Weiyang Palace, Jiang Shuang would always watch and keep him company even if she finished breakfast before he did. Sometimes, she would say a few words, yet most of the time, she would just watch from beside him.
It used to be her happiest moment when he could eat breakfast with Jiang Shuang. She had always hoped that the breakfast time could last longer. However, now he had even eaten the medical meal for her sake, and yet she did not even want to spend some time waiting for him!
Jiang Shuang had changed. She had changed tremendously.
The King looked distracted, but the Queen showed no expression as she stood on the spot, since he had not nodded in agreement.
Aunt Nan felt concerned and reminded him. “King, the Queen is not feeling well. She can’t sit outside for too long. She has to lie down.”
Only then did the King come back to himself and notice that the Queen looked extremely pale.
“Okay, then, you can go inside first,” the King said dumbly.
Despite what Aunt Nan said, he was still feeling really uncomfortable. He had thought that he could have a nice and quiet breakfast with Jiang Shuang!
He sighed.
He believed that he should have a good talk with Jiang Shuang later.
He pushed the food away and decided to leave.
Then the Empress Dowager’s servant Zhu Ying was here. “King, the Empress Dowager is asking for you.”
